Alas, as far as I know, neither the Soi 5 nor Soi 16 Foodlands in BKK have ever carried them.

 

Villa Market at Soi 2 and Soi 11 normally does, but lately, they seem to be out of stock, as are many western things. They must be waiting or late for their import shipment.

 

I'm a regular buyer, so I try to keep my finger on the pulse of the local jalapeno supply situation... :smile:

 

Unfortunately, Foodland Soi 5 is just flat out lousy when it comes to any useful Mexican food products. They have bags of dried pinto beans and flour tortillas in the frig section, some relatively crummy local Danitas tortilla chip bags, and that's about it.

does villa have an outlet in the Ploenchit center? that's a new one on me...musta been villa that I saw the jalapenos some years ago...

 

anyway good advice, when I'm next in town I'll pop over to soi 2 to check it out as my hotel ain't far away...and my leg should be healed then, that sukh pedestrian over pass is a killer with a load of groceries...

Yes, there's a Villa hidden away in the basement of the Ploenchit Center, the one with the big McD's on the front ground floor.

 

I haven't been by there lately, so I can't speak to their stock. If you had the time to pop by before you leave, it might be worth it. But as I said above, I have been to the Soi 11 branch lately and they had none.

 

Jalapenos are a regular stock item for the Villas in BKK. It's just a question of whether they're all sold out before the next import shipment arrives.

yeah, like folks like me today at foodland with the garbanzos seizing their entire stock...

 

won't be able to manage villa tmw as we're onna tight schedule...my BiL likes to cook and I wanna get back home before noon to show him the local talat where I do my shopping while the vendors are still there...get something fer the evening meal, etc...

 

I'll head over to Villa when I meet my son when he comes out in July fer his school hols:

 

'aw hell, dad...did I come halfway around the world to asia to go to some dumb supermarket???' '

 

'shaddap, punk...grab them groceries and hustle...'

Just found a great place to eat western or farang food "Rainbow 24" beach road soi5, its like a 7-11 sandwiched between family mart and 7-11 (probably they are trying to strangle them in the cot). Can go upstairs and eat, have a/c and its quiet

All prices are marked, I paid 109 baht for fishburger, iced tea and chips (real chips-best I had in Pattaya) and just as good as other burgers from M (just slightly on the small side). Most Thai dishes less than 60 baht (spaghetti included).

Its a Thai chain, 7-11 need some competition so give it a try.

Sell everything else 7-11 has but didn't check for beer.

Villa "out of stock" has become a nuisance. to compensate i recently bought whatever was on the shelf of Boursin, Tartare, Bleu pressé and Cambozola. i was expecting the cashier to ask whether i want to open a cheese shop but she didn't react.

I agree Naam,  just can't understand why they can't manage inventory.  They are always walking around with clipboards annotating stock but nothing ever changes.  Like you, if I see something I will buy as much as I can since who knows when it will be back, of course my "piggy" attitude just makes the system even worse for anyone shopping after me

 

I wonder just how much business they loose because they don't have the merchandise to sell

i'd like to know what the clipboards are for. every item is scanned, has a specific item number and the quantity is deducted from existing stock electronically. at least that's what poor old naïve Naam thinks. but perhaps TIT is applicable :sick:

I do the same thing with Villa, LSM, at least for the items that I regularly buy from them that can't readily be found elsewhere.

 

I always try to keep a sufficient back stock at home of my regular things, to cover me for what will be the inevitable weeks (sometimes months) when they'll simply be entirely gone from the store's shelves.

 

I've asked the store managers about it before, and they typically seem to blame problems with the import/customs process. But who knows with them. Based on past experience, it's pretty hard to believe much of what they say.

 

Lately, I'd been regularly buying some imported fat-free Philadelphia cream cheese cartons as a topping for toasted English muffins, and all the Villas had carried that variety and several others similar (salmon, regular, a few more flavors) for a long time. Then in the past few months, the stocks dwindled and finally disappeared entirely. Talked to the store staff, they promised a new shipment coming in a week. Back a week later and then two weeks later, nothing on the shelves. Then talked to another manager and was told, "Oh, those items have been discontinued, we can't get them anymore..."  Does that mean the manufacturer stopped making them, or Villa simply can't get them from their supplier anymore? Good luck in getting any clear answer from the Villa staff on that.

 

Except, very similar versions of exactly the same brand and product (they are 60 and 80% fat free instead of 100% fat free) have now popped up in the Central Markets and one other place. Who knows....

 

But I do agree, I'd buy more there, and buy more consistently, if they could simply manage to keep their regular stock products on the store shelves.

had a liverwurst and mayo sarnie right when I got home and it was sooo gooood, even with stale Farmhouse loaf ends...already finished a jar of olives...

 

now thinkin' about what to do wid de chick peas; hummous? gobi aloo? oh boy...first gotta soak overnight and cook fer 4 hrs...

 

anybody ever seen falafel mix (just add water) at either foodland or villa? wasn't lookin' out fer it yesterday at foodland...

 

gone fer 3 days in BKK and when I got home someone had pinched me scissors from me kitchen...good fer opening bags of beans and flour and most other packaged stuff...

Honestly, I have been cheating a bit with this one, you should put the sauce in a pastry  like in the pic below, but they are not for sale here and I have serious problem baking them (they mostly collapse so I just use a flat piece of pastry - the taste is the same anyway)

Yes,  I've hunted for ready made frozen vol au vent cases a few times. Found some jumbo sized ones in Villa once. But none since ( typical Thailand, sell out, never order again )

I too have made them at home with limited sucess. Either scoring a single sheet of pastry or rolling two together and cutting out with a circular pasty cutter.

I would make a rich bechamel either with chicken and mushroom or prawn and crabmeat. Brings back memories of the dinner party food my Mum would cook in the mid 70's. 

 

Another option for the same filling is to cut a circle of puff pastry and make mini 'pasty' shaped puffs. Not as elegant as a vol au vent but tasty nonetheless.

But is actually large crispy flakes not fine crumbs like we have in Europe. I season the "crumbs" with salt, pepper, thyme, garlic powder and some Bay Seasoning.

 

Then dip the cutlets in flour, egg wash and  then finally the panko. Gives a wonderful crispy coating.

they got Hotto brand japanese breadcrumbs down the market, quite nice texture...usually add a cup to the meatloaf to half kilo ground beef from makro...

 

amazing Thailand...they got jap breadcrumbs all over the place but no garbanzos or olives...wonder what they're used for in thai cuisine?

I have a supplier in the South who can deliver the small ones baked and frozen, but it is such a problem to transport them 800 kms to my place that I gave it up. And they are not big enough for what I want to make anyway.

 

Puff pastry is one of the few things which really don't work well for me. Tried several commercial brands and tried to make it by myself, always some problems. The local brands mostly contain too much sugar (surprise!), they don't 'puff' well etc.  The home made version is ok but quite a lot of work to make. If you want to try it by yourself and you have a pasta maker; make your dough with a pin roll as usual, but finish it with the pasta maker in order to obtain perfect flat sheets of pastry (use some flour at this stage) 

 

In my country the "chicken-mushroom-meatball" sauce it what a turkey is for the Americans. On special occasions mother starts to simmer a whole chicken with vegetables, after hours the meat is removed and the sauce is made. A process which takes almost the whole day. Unfortunately, these days you can buy it in jars in the supermarket - not really same-same...
