YANGON: A high-level committee has been formed by the Burmese government to prevent and mitigate interreligious violence in Burma, the Irrawaddy Online reported on Friday.

According to a statement from the President’s Office released on Friday, the Emergency Management Central Committee comprises vice president Henry Van Thio, ministers of defence and other union ministries, the attorney-general from state and divisional administrations and police commanders.

The statement said that the committee will work to prevent other religious problems and clamp down on instigations of violence.

The committee will work directly with state, divisional and local authorities. It will also work, if required, with civil society on strategies to pre-empt violence locally and to make use of media to spread awareness and to combat harmful instigations coming from within the media.

Burma, in recent years, has seen bouts of anti-Muslim violence across the country, most recently in Pegu division where the government refused to take action against the perpetrators.

The ultra-nationalist Buddhist monks association Ma Ba Tha has been accused of fomenting anti-Muslim sentiment and violence through hate campaigns. However, the State Sangha Maya Mayaka Committee, the highest monastic body, on Tuesday has declared the Ma Ba Tha illegal.
