Thaidream Posted July 20, 2016 Share Posted July 20, 2016 The problem with Thai Buddhism is that almost anyone who walks into a Wat can become a monk which is the root cause of the problem. More and more men without jobs and no hope of ever finding one enter the monkhood solely for a place to sleep, eat and get 'donations'. To me, not everyone who wants to be a monk should be accepted- they should be interviewed, background checked, and then if accepted- put on a probation period to show they really have a calling to the monkhood. There are way too many cases of 'monks' drinking alcohol and carousing. Some are even married and using temple funds to support a wife and children. alboxblue Posted July 20, 2016 Share Posted July 20, 2016 A couple of weeks ago, my g/f and i went to a new monks party, which was held about 200 km`s away. 2 cousins in the family were going to be ordained into the Monkhood. When we arrived, they were smoking and had their arms around their g/f`s. I thought this was inappropriate behaviour, but was told that they were only going to be Monks for 4 months, then they were coming home again. This seems to be normal behavior, but it seemed to me as if they were treating it as a game. It`s very sad, that some people can be so frivalous about tradition and religion. For anyone who knows what temples can really be like (not all ofcourse) but a high percentage will all have its stories.Monks that smoke get me laughing - if they dont have the disciple to stop smoking how on earth will they get anywhere else? Generalchaos Posted July 20, 2016 Share Posted July 20, 2016 I think at this stage with all the controversy that is surrounding Thai Buddhism there needs to be a review by the SSC the only problem is that a lot of them are not what you would call Good Buddhists. They are starting to remind me of the Good Muslim men that i worked with in Pakistan. We don't drink alcohol wait you have no "special" orange juice???? I would hazard a guess that about 70% of these so called monks are nothing more than scum that are ex criminals and unemployable. Route them out! Filthy creatures. In the end they are only human, and we all have moments of weakness. monks are not supposed to ber WEAK! they are supposed to reassure the faithful that being serene and in control is the only way to go. there are so many false monks now, and it started with the crash some years ago when a lot of punks joined the monkhood for three hots and a cot. and there is no discipline handed out by the head monk anymore! kick their sorry asses out and put them in jail before the monkhood is damaged beyond repair.
