What the hell do you know about the deceased's life? What do you know about the hotel's balcony - its name isn't even mentioned.

The guy was butt naked and fell off a balcony. He could've been pissed up or high as a kite - you don't know.

Still, I suppose the fact that he was white and young is more than enough reason for the Thaivisa CSI (Armchair Division) to apportion blame to anyone but the deceased.

A suicide verdict does not blemish the good name of Thailand. Ask TAT. Firstly having been a 25 year old Aussie I am probably more aware of his attitude than an a non Aussie. Secondly what does the name of the hotel have to do with it. I have stayed in probably 50 or 60 hotels in Thailand and can say with out a doubt, that of those with balconies, all have been too low. The height would not meet the standard of any other country. As for the "Armchair division" I thought "could have been pissed or high as a kite" pretty speculative. So wind in your neck turtle.

Solid post. Great insight.

I thought they did, but nobody bothered to vote.

So Thailand came in as "Scrumdilyicious". (or something like that)

Yes, I remember that survey.  The one that everyone voted in but cannot ever remember doing so or even seeing.

It never gets easier reading about these young guys making such permanent choices for what is most often temporary tough luck.

How d'you know he made that choice? Could have been tipsy and accidentally went over. Easily done here. Balconies are low and the beer strong.

it is common in australia to refer to suicides as accidents. it must make the perpetrator's families feel better. australians have a strange relationship with death. no one ever DIES in oz, they pass away, get taken prematurely, loose a battle with cancer, go on their last journey and so on. it took me minutes to understand that oz wife #2's mother had died after she told me ' mum is gone'.

What a crock of rubbish. I have seen so much rot. Suicide is suicide, yes even in Australia. The only thing Australians have a strange relationships with is idiocy. You seem to have a very good grasp on that.

RIP to the young man and condolences to the family.

Agreed. Further into the thread I agreed it was quite likely  he fell accidentally.

Nope. Just think with stats about some thing as specialised as number of deaths by falling you should only compare like with like.

E.G. expats with expats, residents with residents, citizens with citizens etc...

Otherwise how do you know one particular group in any given society is dying more or less frequently in a specific manner than a comparable group in any other society?

But expats are residents, what I don't understand is why you feel that the single variable of nationality could make these particular residents incomparable to residents as a whole.  Anyway, falling is the second most common cause of accidental death worldwide and there are some 40 to 50 foreigner deaths from falling from balconies per year in Thailand while there are millions of tourists going on balconies every year which are often low and often while they are intoxicated, I see nothing in the slightest suspicious from the stats.

Yeah the forum's replete with kooks accusing the TAT of covering shit up to protect the good name of Thailand.

As far as these oh-so-persecuted fools are concerned, no farang could possibly die from a suicide or an accident. The truth is always massaged to show Thailand in a good light and the farang is an innocent, pure of heart holidaymaker. Here's your idiotic assertion

A 25 year old does not come to thailand for a holiday and decide to kill himself. He would have been enjoying himself and doing as he pleases.

I said he could have been pissed up or high. Your statement reeked of absolutism. I think t's your neck that needs to be wound in, Sherlock

Wake up. They're mostly here to get pissed and bang hookers and some of them go too far. Period.

As for your claim that because you were a 25 year old Aussie way back when, you somehow have a unique insight into the mentality of today's 25 year old Aussie, I'm ROFLMAO. I was a 25 year old Brit once but I don't think that provides me with more insight into what a 25 year old Brit thinks like today but, then again, I'm not deluded.

I, too, have stayed in countless hotels in Thailand and can remember balcony railings being perfectly reasonably safe but I guess I wasn't slumming it in a KhaoSan guesthouse.

If you had any more insight into the attitude of a 25 year old Aussie than I did, you'd no doubt be aware that he'd far more likely be pissed up or high than settling down for a good read of a spy novel on his holidays.

Stop talking crap - you just embarrass yourself.

I'll tell you exactly what happens in these cases. They get drunk and get laid and then go out onto the balcony and sit on the rail while smoking a cigarette and thinking about how "Life is Good".. Something happens and they loose their balance and fall to their death..

And just what sort of experience do many TV members have with the Royal Thai Police Force? Are the criminals or are the engaged as consultant detectives by the police?

No I stand by what I said.

You are so very WRONG, many are reported as death by misadventure, and in WA they are often reported as  a police incident, or if by train, rail incident, in oder to reduce copycat deaths.

Rubbish!

australian media has strict guidelines on reporting... What you mention above is either sensitive/responsible reporting, or Australian slang

When is Thai Visa going to run a survey to see how many people think they are murdering us daily with impunity?

"Murdering us"....?   Who is "us?"  If you're this paranoid, you need to get the heck out of this country pronto.

Ok, I will take the paranoid comment on the chin but in return I would like to ask you a question.

Do you read Thai Visa on a daily basis?

If so can you honestly say to me that farang are not getting killed here on a daily basis under extremely suspicious circumstances?

Fair enough.  I believe the news media is reporting more of this type of news than before.  Which is to say we're more informed than before.  It doesn't mean that farangs (and Thais) are being killed in higher numbers than before, but it just means we're finding out more readily and rapidly than before.  And based on my own personal observations, I do not see that Thailand is any more dangerous now than it was 10 years ago.

I didn't say they were suspicious. They just don't make sense to me. Reread my post to see why.

But why does it have to be a particular group in society that we look at, what is wrong with looking at the numbers for a particular cause of death as a whole?  After all, is there not a representation from all groups of society amongst the expats and tourists in Thailand? There are many factors to consider, numbers of balconies per population, difference in safety regulations, difference in frequency of intoxication between expats in Thailand and US citizens, the comparison is far from perfect, but the odds are on for some falls in Thailand and the numbers are in no way alarming, so what really is the issue?  Considering that the rate is lower than in the US but the safety regulations are much more lax in Thailand and that there are presumably far more balconies in Thailand per population, I think it fair to assume that there is nothing untoward going on in the majority of these cases.

Your OP referred to a website that tracks deaths by falling/suicide of foreigners in Thailand. Therefore any stats used to discredit this site as being alarmist must refer to the same set of criteria used by this website, otherwise they are meaningless.

I am not saying that you are wrong in your feeling it is not unusual but your stats do not back up your argument.

Yes, I understand what you have said repeatedly, but what you in every occasion have failed to do is actually give a reason why you think that foreigner statistics are incompatible to native residents, last chance, what is your reasoning?

And obviouly reporting every death by falling is alarmist, no national news provider would ever report this type of incident for their own citizens, it just isn't news, but since a couple of apparent murders we have been told each and every falling case, that is by definition alarmist reporting.

Ah,  so you can't back up your original OP. That's all I needed to know.

P.S. At no point have I said you are wrong, you might be right. Maybe the number of foreigners falling to their death in Thailand is no more than the norm in every country. I seriously doubt it and was curious as to whether you could prove your case.

But you can't, can you?

Wow, in my opinion I have demonstrated that the figures are not high amongst foreigners in Thailand with my stats, it is just you who thinks that they don't through some unexplained reasoning that the group is incomparable with citizens as a whole.  I take it from your failure to explain your "reasoning" that you don't actually have one.
