Yala geared up against imminent flood

Yala Province said it will be gearing up its forces to counter the imminent flood as the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rainfall in the region.

Yala Governor Thira Minthrasak (ธีระ มินทราศักดิ์) revealed that the province has prepared for natural disasters such as inundation, storms, and landslides caused by heavy rains expected during this period. To prevent possible damages and protect residents, the province ordered all districts to set up a special center to inform residents, especially those living in the disaster-prone areas, to keep abreast of the Meteorological Department’s weather forecast. The governor also insisted that all district chiefs consider whether their area of responsibility is ready to cope with disasters and ensure that help can be delivered to the victims in time. As for the landslide, the province ordered the provincial highway department to bring rescuing equipments to routes which might be affected by landslide.

The Meteorological Department warned the province of heavy rains in this month as the Northeastern monsoon is blowing across the South China Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and the Southern region. Heavy to very heavy rains, floods, flash floods, and landslides are expected.

Flash flood-prone areas in Yala are the banks of Saiburi (สายบุรี) River in Raman District and the banks of Pattani River starting from Ban Nangsata (บันนังสตา) District to the province’s municipal area. As for the landslide, it often hits the Yala-Betong (ยะลา-เบตง) route starting from Ban Nangsata District to Be Thong District.
