webfact Posted August 17, 2016 Share Posted August 17, 2016 Shan parliament to reconsider site of new parliament The speaker of the Shan State parliament has pledged to reconsider the site for the construction of a new parliament building after environmental groups voiced objections against the proposed site, citing that there are more than 80 huge trees which will have be felled to make way for the project, The Irrawaddy Online reported on Tuesday. The environmental groups launched a signature collection campaign last week to stop the project at its current location described as a “landmark area” in Taunggyi. Taunggyi-based environment activist Cherry Kyaw who chairs the local Living Earth Green Network said the state parliament speaker Sai Loon Seng from Union Solidarity and Development Party met with activists on Saturday for a discussion regarding their objection to the location of the project. She claimed that the speaker promised to consider their demand and would consult with the regional government about finding a new site. She said the opposition groups did not oppose the parliament building project but only reject the proposed venue because it will have a lot of impacts on the local ecology.
