I wasn't talking about whether or not the police have changed what was initially a suicide matter into a murder enquiry are we?

This is about the proclivity some posters here have for expecting the police to solve a crime or incident in the short period between discovery and initial reports in the media

No, I expect them to do the prudent thing and tell the public it will take some time to come up with a ruling.  Not to blurt out "suicide attempt", effectively painting themselves into a corner before they've had a chance to investigate.

I've just about switched most of my products to German made this year. From engine oils to transmission oils, once you have really tried it, you really would never go back to American or Japanese. It's just a totally different level.

Just don't use a German suicide advisor!

So am I.  Even looking past the stigma and the sadness, look at the practical side of a suicide ruling.  Let's widen the scope to murder or accident vs suicide.

What travel insurance is going to cover a tourist in hospital, emergency evacuation, repatriation of remains, or death benefits for someone who buys a policy and then deliberately kills himself (or tries and fails) within weeks?  How many life insurance policies won't pay out (or pay a significantly reduced amount) for a suicide?  (See note below)

So if a tourist falls off a balcony because the railing is too low, a suicide ruling may protect Thailand's tourism image (and the hotel's liability) but it could cost his survivors in the 6 figures when they get hit with all the costs and denied any benefits.

If a tourist is murdered, add to the $$$ cost the fact that there's a murderer walking around uncaught if there's a presumption of suicide.

Note:  If anyone does find a travel or life insurance that pays out survivor benefits for short time suicides, let me know.  I have a dastardly business idea to offer suicide intend-ees an amazing sendoff in return for being named a beneficiary.  Of course, that's tongue in cheek.  But it's to preempt the guys who are going to come on and say that their short term travel insurance pays out for suicides.

I would agree with your entire premise above and would not be surprised IF it happens but I am not seeing it with this one. This looks pretty clear cut from the limited info available.

I just have trouble understanding what a motivation for murdering some of these recently passed farang would be? Why would someone kill them? Heck, I stay at nice hotels and someone could break into my safe easily. Or pay off the staff who have the master key. Much less downside risk than murder.

Plus I have never met a Thai yet who doesn't blab about a crime within a short time of it being committed. If these farang deaths were all murders, would we not hear something on facebook by some guys vindictive ex-girlfriend?

I understand your post and I agree with the premise. But I don't know if its enough to put a knife in the hand of s killer on this one because a killer would not have stopped slitting the throat and opted for a free-fall. They would have continued to slice.

No disrespect intended but what a mess this poor guy is in. One can see why the Germans lost 2 world wars though. I just hope he recovers ' I hope it was not caused by a fickle woman. Everyone deserves a better ending.

Yes but they won the Franco/Prussian war in 1870, another one who thinks 70 years ago was yesterday

Just to be clear, I have absolutely no opinion or theory on the facts of this case.

My opinions are related to the handling of the case, and even that's within the context of a few dozen other cases I've followed casually (and others that I can't follow because they fall out of the media) in the 5+ years I've been living in BKK.

Having dealt extensively with the Thai Police I can unequivocally state that they are not competent, thus any criticism leveled at them for poor performance is usually accurate.

They are far more interested in making money from their various illegal businesses, extortions and shakedowns to do any proper Police work. They simply don't function as a Police force should, and have no interest in doing anything for the public good.

Agreed it is a tough job for those who have to clean up the mess and that includes the BiB.

There is a pro/con to dying abroad.

For a surviving family member, it is terribly difficult to navigate the beaurocracy and language barriers of the morgue and the funeral home where the body is interned and to complete the papers and pay the graft before the body will be released. All while you are grieving the loss of a loved one and trying to remember the last words spoken when you last saw them.

The only upside is the body can often be cremated and so it is delivered to you in a less painful (albeit slight) method than a full casket seversl weeks old.

But this guy, lime many suicides, probably was not thinking too clearly. After all, he botched the job and he is a German.

Most of us here, maybe the older guys, understand that life can really suck it out of you and after a certain age maybe you lose the enthusiasm to try again. Or maybe a guy is diagnosed with a chronic disease and he is left to face it alone. Maybe he has Alzheimers and realizes his mind is slipping more frequently.

Regardless, If  the decision is made to do it then I sure feel bad for the guy who fails.

It's so obvious what happened!

He cut himself shaving, which explains why there was so little blood. He went to the window so what little blood there was wouldn't drip on the floor, thn he slipped on the one drop he did let fall, and before he could say, "Got in Himmel", he was head-butting a 12th floor balcony!

Case soved!

Now will all you haters of our brave Boys in Brown please visit the nearest temple for seven days to pay penance for your callous and hurtful remarks.

Slashes his throat and throws himself out a window, sounds like he was serious. Oh wait, that's what the police believe so might wait to hear what the Germans believes.

Had he succeeded then several here would be calling it murder and blaming the BiB for a cover-up  ;-)

The poor guy thought his life was bad before...now its even worse.

Well at least we would hope so.

It doesn't matter where you are in the world if the dark mists inside your mind comes down, it's going to happen. Most  successful suicide is the 2nd or more attempts. I have little doubt if he is able when he is released he will go for it again. Phycologist will say they can help but I dint belive they do.
