rooster59
Immigration officer faces murder charge for fatal Rohingya shooting The Phuket News The 18-year-old Rohingya escapee Mohammad Khawnee was shot dead while fleeing immigration officers in pursuit after the mass breakout of Rohingya refugees from the Phang Nga Immigration Detention Centre on May 23. Photo: The Phuket News / file PHUKET: The immigration officer who fatally shot a Rohingya man on the run after escaping the Immigration Centre in Phang Nga in May is facing a murder charge in court, Phang Nga Police Deputy Superintendent Col Chote Chitchai has confirmed. Sgt Thanakorn Noosawas of the Phang Nga Immigration Office shot dead 18-year-old Rohingya escapee Mohammad Khawnee while in pursuit of the fugitive on May 23. Mr Mohammad was one of 21 Rohingya migrants who escaped the Phang Nga Immigration Detention Centre at about 3am that day. Police claimed that Sgt Thanakorn had opened fire in self-defence, as the group of escapees that Sgt Thanakorn was pursuing with other officers had started throwing large rocks down at them from higher up on the steep ridge. (See story here.) “Sgt Thanakorn is facing the murder charge at Phang Nga Provincial Court,” Col Chote told The Phuket News. “The trial is still ongoing. It is taking time as the court still has yet to receive the official autopsy report [on the body of Mr Mohammad],” he said. “Police handed this case to the court a month ago after we questioned all witnesses and people involved in the shooting,” Col Chote explained. Mickmouse1
While it is appreciated that he was charged, how on earth could the corript police say "shot in self defence " if they are running away from you, that means you are on the attack..f.rotten

farcanell
The escape was on May 23 rd.... And the court is still waiting on the autopsy result... What the <deleted>??? interesting to see what sentence will be handed out, compared to three death sentences and two life sentences for the five involved in the mayoral murder case. the rug supply businesses must be booming
sandgroper2
"had started throwing large rocks down at them from higher up on the steep ridge. (See story here.)". Large rocks, indeed, small ones too, can kill, i would have fired. As an ex serviceman, I have fired for much less reason.
Saradoc1972
Give this guy a medal. Bit like the German problem. They flood into your country, you want them or not, with the law, against the law. Well, OK, they came, the Thais put them somewhere secure. Been running for their lives, haven't they? Got roofed, got fed, were secure now, weren't they? No, not good enough. Nice fence, it's there to be hopped over or breaking. Like the laws. Can't expect police to play catch or dodge rocks, that's the Europeans. It's what security experts told the European nations all along, at some point you have to start shooting.
