I'd want the place shut down if I lived nearby...

 Why?

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

It's a crap hole, sure, but it is hidden in an underground parking lot. You could be on top of it and you would never know.

They certainly aren't disturbing the neighbors.

Hmm, from the OP

''One was the after hours meeting place Climax that advertises itself on the internet "where the party never stops", reported tnamcot.

The raids were conducted after members of the public complained about after hours opening.''

Now, there's a thing.

Obviously annoying some people.

Maybe they were disturbing others after all eh...

Not good, is it, any branch of the state granting themselves infinite arbitrary powers...

Ah, finally a glimmer of hope, he's just starting to get it. A few dozen more repeats and explanations of the obvious, and it might sink in.

climax disco is in the basement/parking level of ambassador hotel with no residential places close to be bothered by music. the music db level at the entrance is quite low.

the army were polite and humble. they did not conduct body searches or urine testing as the police typically do in hopes of finding ways to extort cash.

apparently climax is aligned with the police which can explain why they stay open very late.

it seemed the army wanted to make a statement so the police will know who the boss is.

detaining all inside for 2 hours was part of that statement.

Correct on all counts.

Although there are late night clubs nearby (11, Nana & 12) that all stay open as late as Climax. Their affiliations are more green, less brown - oddly they weren't raided. :)

I think for "ya ba" which I reckon are  amphetamines..

if I am not mistaken it was a little bit after the Tha Yang lights which are the only lights in between Cha-am and Phetchaburi city.

the annoyance here is that it's about a 20 minutes drive after having already went to the bathroom..

that particular time they were VERY excited to figure out that I was a farang.. I wear a motocross helmet with tinted goggles but as soon as he figured me out he started shouting "farang! farang!" and pointing to me.

So it's when you were leaving the beach.

But coming from BKK tio Cha-am I think that we do not need to drive on this road ?

Please don't post incorrect info.  Your license doesn't have your current visa.  Which indicates whether you are in the country legally or not.

Sometimes, all they will accept is the original passport.  And for good reasons.

Your being silly

Do as you want

I have been in Thailand enough years to know a Thai ID/License is sufficient........They are not immigration & if there is a question as to your

legality they will escort you to obtain proof

If you've been here that long, then you've read the reports about this.  If you been here a long time you know the Thai police can do whatever they want.  Including fining you for not having your passport on you.  It is the law.

But yes, most of the time, a photocopy is fine.  Most of the time.

I bet these people wish they had carried their passport:

Actually, I know quite a few.  One spent the night in jail after being caught up in a round up here in Pattaya last year.  Everybody who had a copy were let got.  It happens.  You did read that article right?  Kinda proves what I'm saying.  It does happen.

Anyone know what the deal with Hillary Group is? Who is Hillary?

From Stickman:

The Hillary Group

Operator of the 4 Hillary bars, Morning Night and Climax.

With 4 beer bars on Soi Nana (Hillary 1, 2, 4 and Morning Night) and Hillary 3 and Climax on Sukhumvit soi 11, the Hillary Group has a strong presence in two of the busiest entertainment sois in the heart of the farang section of Sukhumvit.  What sets the Hillary Group apart from the other bar areas profiled is that it's headed by a gracious, highly successful Thai lady.

Whether it is operated under the Hillary Group banner I am not sure, but the owner of the Hillary Group also holds the lease for the 9 (?) shophouses out the front of Nana Plaza through which Stumble Inn and co. sub-lease.  Two of those bars comprising 4 of those shophouses are operated by the Hillary Group themselves.

With excellent connections, some of the Hillary Group properties remain open well after other venues have closed.  Climax and the Hillary bars further down Soi Nana are usually open until 4 AM or later which is a huge advantage and almost a licence to print money.

The owner of the Hillary Group has good connections with the Thai music industry and mini concerts are often held in the Hillary bars with the likes of Sek Loso having performed numerous times, along with other big names.

The Hillary bars are well-run and the likes of Hillary 1, 2, 4 and Morning Night offer variety so you can look for a companion or just relax and enjoy good music.  As such, the Hillary bars have developed a strong following.

It's all about who you know.  I was in a bar a few weeks ago till 5am.  The place was packed.

Yeah, there's lots of decent after hours bars here. I used to live in Shanghai tho, it's not quite on that level.

Why exactly are the military in peacetime roaming the capital city and policing opening hours? In fact why are the military in peacetime outside the barracks at all?

That's nothing. In Pattaya they are overseeing the beach chairs. Funny old country. But then, what else have they got to do.

no, that set of lights you mean is IN Cha-am

we are talking about Phetkasem road, which goes from like Bangkok to like Chumpon if not further to Surat (too lazy to check)

It's been a while and I can't be certain but the blockade was about here:

https://goo.gl/maps/e4v9S9HzXew

if you check it, notice the intersection a little bit south, that is the lights in Tha Yang before you get to Mueang Phetchaburi

You don't have to have been here very long to be aware of the new rule, photo ID of any sort used to be enough, now it has to be proof of legal stay, and it doesn't matter that they are not immigration, that is who they will take you to next, you may be allowed to go to your room to show them your passport, you may not and may need someone to bring it for you, it depends on the arresting officer.  It is a criminal offense not to carry it, so really it is you who is being silly by posting your past experience as if it simply must be also the case for the future, thing change, we had a coup, we are supposed to carry our passports.

Well, I have been coming for 17 years and lived here permanently for 5 years and the reason I posted that is that I think making people aware of the actual law and potential outcomes is more valuable than the likes of you posting what you recon will probably be alright.
