However, in this university I went for an interview they said I have to make 35 hours per week, although a max of 15 of teaching. That is almost like being in a goverment school all day... Also they pay is not that great, only 30k. I was excited about this job because I thought universities were more chilled and I could have part time job as well. These office hours are usually regularly scheduled so people will know when they are available. However, 20 office hours to 15 teaching hours sounds excessive. That is what I would guess it all boils down to, that and just the usual authoritarian control freak style of many managers, admin higher ups etc. that you will find in most teaching jobs. They probably feel that you get up to no good if given too much time away from them and that you become a lost and confused foregner who would either go out womanizing, drinking or worse yet, start teaching your own lessons or work a second job for someone else. In most cases they would actually prefer it if you would live with them as well and maybe do housework and babysitting for their children, but I think they know thats taking it too far, but they will probably ask you if you would like to live at the school and perhaps rent a converted classroom, just say no, it ruins it for all of and they will start in with "Well. our last teacher Billy lived in the birdcage on the top of our classroom building and he just loved it! Some of the international programs have you sign in/out like mcdonalds. The wage is accurate i get paid a bit more because i am a specialist. The opportunities to make more $ involve more teaching... When not teaching you can bet your life they'll want you around to help them design test papers, correct PhD theses, attend interminable meetings... Mostly American and Philippine teachers. I swear that most of the monkeys, used to pick coconuts are smarter then these guys. A lot of these using drugs. What a joke. I get full time pay for basically part time hours. I go in for my first class at 1100 and I'm usualy home by 1700 only because I always stay after school for the sport and to do a bit of prep for the following week. I work one Saturday morning a month 0900 to 1300 for which I get extra pay. I also every two months go on camp (volunteer). I have no problems with the Thai teachers at all in fact I have to say it's a happier environment than I ever had back in my home country teaching. After 2 months I realized the school and drugged up teachers were a joke. So it was a drop in the bucket; and I learn that Swiss trained teachers are the best. Next time you apply for a job, tell em you have other commitments and can only be on campus x amount of hours per week. Also, regarding the salary, you need to ask about the availability of extra work via enhancement courses. Every university has these enhancement courses from time to time and they usually need foreigners to teach em. They're paid hourly at 500 up and can usually be scheduled around your teaching hours. A few years ago a uni. English Dept. where I worked hired a teacher with only a high school diploma. Main qualifications: native speaker, good-looking, young, and dazzling personality. Go figure.
