webfact Posted September 19, 2016 Share Posted September 19, 2016 US urged to support reform in jade trade in Burma LONDON: -- London-based Global Witness has called on the US administration to support reform of Burma’s dirty jade trade after Washington announced on Wednesday to lift many of the remaining sanctions on Burma, The Irrawaddy Online reported last Friday. In a statement released on Thursday, the NGO said US efforts must focus on clearing army companies and families out of the jade trade worth up to US$31 billion in 2014 and support local call for reform and peace. By dropping the sanctions, Juman Kubba of Global Witness said the US drops its “leverage over the former generals, drug lords and military-owned companies that still secretly control critical industries like jade”.
