Briton gets 4,000 baht fine for not staying where he was registered

PATTAYA: -- A Briton in Pattaya was slapped with a four thousand baht fine by immigration for not staying where he had said he was residing.

 

John Paul Withers, 38, was found to be staying in a place where he was not registered and was fined according to 1979 immigration regulations.

 

He was one of the latest casualties featured on the Chonburi Immigration website under the banner "Good guys in, Bad guys out".

 

Immigration warned foreigners that they should stay where they have registered or would face fines. Mr.Withers was fined after immigration looked into the registration of foreigners in the Banglamung area on September 13th.

 

In other news a 41 year old Kyrgyzstan national called Nikita Komissarov was arrested in the lobby of the Royal Cliff Beach hotel on Friday last. He was found to have overstayed by 714 days.

 

 

He claimed that his passport was damaged and he couldn't go home.

 

Two restaurants have also been the subject of arrests for having illegal workers and hiring illegal workers.

 

On the 19th of September 25 Cambodians were arrested at the Sense of the Sea in Jomtien for working in Thailand illegally. Owner Phanom Bandasak, 33, was taken to Na Jomtien police station for hiring them.

 

And on the 22nd of September The Living Bistro and Bar in Banglamung was raided and ten illegal workers were found. Owner Somchai Wongcharnsri was arrested for hiring them.

Good Job Immigration fro the 4k THB. Just do everything what is possible to shy away tourists. I think, the best solution could be to to assign to every foreigner an guide, like in North Korea.

Was this for not staying where he stated on a TM landing card one has to fill out on arrival?

 

If it was because he was not staying where he stated when doing a 90 days reporting then hardly a tourist...

To be fair this is a constipated rule which was also applied by UK IMMIG at one time and maybe still in force.Simply inform the Sharks that U changed your address n you will be safe BAD GUY?

That's a good idea. Immigration pays for a huge government employment, so with every tourist comes one government job, as an escort.

I do not see it as a " constipated rule", I think it only fair that any country can require all persons to register where they live, and if temporary like a hotel or guest house then they should have register.

 

Wish they would do this in the UK, it would make it more difficult for the illegal immigrants and easier to find wanted people.

Many single people come here just on a flight and find a place to stay after they have arrived, so how can you write the name of the place your going to stay on the TM card if you don't know where.

It's like driving a car without a licence - you can do it for years and years and years, and may never get caught. Same for registering where people live. It's only when people have a reason to go looking they find out you're not there

Years back when I didn't have a permanent address I used to just write Pattaya as place residing thats it and nobody ever questioned it, I don't know nowadays.

China too asks that all foreigners be registered by their hotel, though they are not as strict as the Thais.

having  to write where one is staying on a TM while in transit... I assume most would be like my TM cards eligible, never been asked to rewrite it or "where you stay?", I think once I just wrote "Bangkok"... if a genuine tourist one is likely to be staying where there is proper registering of guests and will be in the Kingdom for less than 30 days.

I can not understand the logic of this rule. Absolutely giving the wrong message i think. So infantile and humiliating i think for the country to implement such.

So let me get this right theres a task force that goes door knocking for money. I dont see how this practice would achieve much else.

Maybe they could head out to where i live and fine the illegal loggers, charcoal makers and sellers, petty crims, selling dirt from sorpakor land, drug makers in the jungle, forest land burning, land encroachment, rewriting land titles, etc, etc... Most of those are supposed to be more than ฿4000thb per offense. Have to get your priorities right though i guess. 

Maybe ill be fined. My address is too big to fit on the form so always incomplete.

As far as I understand it is for the owner of the hotel you stay in or the owner of the house you are renting to fill the TM30 form and bring it to the immigration. So this guy may have been fined for someone's else "mistake".

It's not about Thais. It's about foreigners being incapable of complying with the rules.

I think it is a few hundred; at least. 

Like the USA , with 10 million illegals. I sure Thailand has 10-20 thousand. And the Cambodians don't count.

Perhaps it's hard because the visitor didn't know that his address needed to be reported?

 

When you arrived in Thailand, did Immigration give you a list of all the things that you must do to comply with Immigration laws?

When I arrive with many months of visa or extension, they remind me to do 90 day reports, but that's all.

I fill in the arrival card on the plane so I and maybe others suppose that the address requirement has been fulfilled?

 

My Thai wife had no idea about the TM30, even suggested it was not required....

If I had not joined TVF, I would never have known!

people that do not respect the immigration laws and rules of a country allowing them to stay should have heavy fines its the only way to teach people a lesson
