The BiB checked every hotel in a certain area on September 13 and the overstayer was unlucky to be there when they arrived I guess.

Either that or he bought a tourist SIM which immigration now uses to track tourists.

Can be,as if his passport was really damaged,a high rated hotel like Royal Cliff shouldn't let him check in.

I have visited Thailand several times, each time bar one I just put down Nana hotel Bkk on the form even when I knew I was not going to stay there. I did this as I was intending to stay at some village that I did not know the name of or how to spell it. The only time I did not put the Nana hotel Bkk was when I had a Police escort through the VIP exit from Don Muang airport.

Now if they can just start slapping hefty fines on all those tourists--and their owners--illegally renting condos on a short-term basis...

owners who wish to lease their condos for short term should be allowed to do  by making a special provision for such leases. they should be strictly instructed to record the particulars of the tenants  and  ensure that they have a valid visa for stay in Thailand.

As already stated we do not know the full circumstances of the guy fined 4,000B but maybe the 90 day reporting should be an address to which you could be contacted, either you stay frequently or if you travel as part of ones job an office you communicate with on a regular basis.

No, sorry, if you are away from your residence for longer than 24 hours the house owner is required to notify the police and you are required to notify immigration. It doesn't matter if you are having a trip around Thailand and are stopping every night in a different place = 31 notifications x 2 =bloody nonsense. Oz is not the most perfect place but you only have to name where you are staying when you enter the country after that it's "off you go". :welcomeani::smile:

Overstay deluxe at Royal Cliff

He could not go home because his passport was damaged.

Haha, nice try :cheesy:

We don't expect a little problem when going home, don't we :whistling:

i am curious how and on what he survived for nearly two years. unless he was receiving regular remittances he must have in commercial activities, which is also contrary to the laws of the country.

Law is law

join or leave Thailand

The problem is that Thailand is essentially a lawless land. Coupling the notion of 'law' with that of 'Thailand' is like bracketing together the concepts of 'pregnancy' and  'virginity' (excepting the Virgin Mary - if you are a Christian!). There is no genuine law in Thailand - only rules which are infinitely flexible and infinitely enforceable or non-enforceable as the whim suits the fake 'elites' and petty criminals who run this land for their utterly selfish and conscience-free self-aggrandizement.

Thailand a nation of law and order? No way! It never has been and likely never will be.

Yes but it gives the crawlers on here a rosey glow seeing fellow farang drop in the cart and reminds them how clever they are by obeying to the letter every petty little rule and reg.

Bet they were always reporting their classmates at school.

Break the law anywhere and pay the penalty. This isn't rocket science dear friend.

Was this for not staying where he stated on a TM landing card one has to fill out on arrival?

If it was because he was not staying where he stated when doing a 90 days reporting then hardly a tourist...

Is this to do with your Landing Card or was he a long term stayer registered at an address?

Good Job Immigration fro the 4k THB. Just do everything what is possible to shy away tourists. I think, the best solution could be to to assign to every foreigner an guide, like in North Korea.

Hmmm so you think just do as you please>>>

As far as I understand it is for the owner of the hotel you stay in or the owner of the house you are renting to fill the TM30 form and bring it to the immigration. So this guy may have been fined for someone's else "mistake".

YES, this is what scares me. How the heck do I know if my landlord has filed a TM30. Likely the Thai landlord doesn't know a TM30 exist. I go for my 90 day report soon, you may be seeing my picture in the papers.

This is bad for Thailand to fine someone like this The publicly will hurt tourism if the media decide to play this one

I would say he is not a tourist in the sense of the word 90 day report says to me longer term stayer certainly not tourist. So why would it hurt tourism.

I have heard about this rule before;

Is it enough that the hotel reports our presence or do we also have to go to immigration?

Many single people come here just on a flight and find a place to stay after they have arrived, so how can you write the name of the place your going to stay on the TM card if you don't know where.:unsure:

I'm suspect he was not staying at the address he listed for some type of visa extention for which he had applied and been approved for. I doubt it has anything to do with the address one puts on a TM card.

So how do they expect someone for example travelling around Thailand for 30 days to write on the TM card where they are staying? Some tourist might stay in 6 or 7 different places during there trip here.  Another example, you go to your girlfriend/wife's home village for 3 for 4 weeks.  While away, you are not staying where you are registered either.

I do not see it as a " constipated rule", I think it only fair that any country can require all persons to register where they live, and if temporary like a hotel or guest house then they should have register.

Wish they would do this in the UK, it would make it more difficult for the illegal immigrants and easier to find wanted people.

Yes, fair enough, but did you know that, by law, you can also get the shaft for not notifying the police/imm that you intend to stay away from your 'residence' for more than 24 hours? Possibly covered when registering at a hotel, but what if the hotel doesn't keep up with their paperwork or you stay at a friend's for the weekend. Stuff could easily happen to any of us if it's not our day, tats or no. Just sayin'.

Although visa people need to have a registered address in the UK, it's possible they'd get nobbled if staying elsewhere when Imm come knocking. If not, I think they should make a point of targetting Thais only. :giggle:

I'm not sure if this is the case.

All I can do is speak from experience.   I am in Thailand on an O Visa, 1 year extension based on marriage, with multiple re-entry.   I leave Thailand about every 9 to 11 weeks.  Often when I return to BKK, I stay in BKK for a few days, then either drive or fly back to my family up North.

After returning home, I then go (with my wife) to the immigration office within 24 hrs, show them my documents, such that they know that I left Thailand, and I am now back with my family.  I think my wife fills out another TM30 (or they just keep the old one on file, as there are no changes).

Any how, nothing but pleasantries are shared at the immigration office.  There is no mention regarding my wife not informing immigration of my departure.

What does make me nervous about the 4k fine, as I mentioned before, I usually stay in BKK a few days before I head home. I certainly do not want any problems with authorities while I am in BKK.   (and no I don't hang out in bars and chase girls etc etc).  Not that I pass judgement on those that do, I'm just saying it isn't my life style.

You can't snd aren't expected to do so.  If required, Immigration Officers would Insist on the card being appropriately completed.  They don't.

This guy wasn't a tourist.
