Cockfighting purse largest in Thai history

Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: Two veteran roosters in Samui’s cockfighting ring drew the largest bets in Thailand’s history yesterday.

Cockfighters from Chumporn, Ranong, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Samui circled around the Baan Lipa Yai ring yesterday afternoon, cheering and placing more than 2 million baht in bets.

The headlining fight, between an eight-month-old gamecock from Chumporn named Hua Pok, and a two-year-old cock from Samui named Sor Kanitsorn, were slated to fight through two twenty-minute periods. Both experienced animals had successfully fought every previous opponent, ratcheting up the blood-thirsty gamblers’ excitement for the primitive 'sport.

I was always told cock fighting and gambling are illegal in Thailand ? I mean dominos and card games are !

You are right! Sorry to tell that the Phuket Gazette article is poor : it should have explained first if the fight and the bets were legal or not. Also we need pictures.

I thought the Thai men had world's smallest cocks...:passifier:

they make up by having really large roosters.

cock fights are a big thing up here and, yes, they frequently get raided and shut down. only to re - emerge at a different location 2 weeks later.

Cockfighting is legal at registered stadiums and I think the birds need to be registered.  Cockfighting is even excluded from the Animal Welfare Bill here!

No different from Spanish bullfighting re the combatants - both primitive 'entertainment'. But it should have been clear that a two-year old cock who had survived previous battles would defeat an eight-month old owing to greater experience.

What the hell am I dribbling on about - obviously need to get out more.
