KHON KAEN: -- It was all smiles from the nurses and patients at Khon Kaen Hospital yesterday when a foreigner turned up with a basket full of black ribbons.

He handed them out to staff and visitors who were amused by the sign that said: "I can't speak Thai" - written in Thai (phom phuut Thai mai dai khrap).

He explained in English that it was a gesture of respect for King Bhumibol.

The story was shared online on the Facebook fan page of the hospital.

Neither the man's name nor his nationality was reported.
