Expats air their concerns with Minister of Tourism & Sports

The main problem with Chiang Mai Imm is that there is only one person doing extensions of stay, would that be fair to say?

Just raising this one again as it came up at the meeting but appears that one of the main answers is there already but not being utilised for some reason.

Immigrations other office at Prom is supposedly for the disabled and elderly who will have to qualify their disability or age in some way ( yet to be determined- ballot, guns before dawn etc?) to use this facility.

It is a fact that there is already an officer at the new office capable of doing extensions of stay which would double the capacity then why does the problem persist- rhetorical?

They should just take a phone call to Chonburi immigration office and learn from them , very simple really . No more heavy paper work just to do a simple 90 day report.  So are the provincial government offices trying to communicate at all and learn from their mistakes ?   I don't think so .

Yes more expats are living in Pattaya but they managed to solve the queue problems , in and out within 10 minutes,

How  about after staying 5  years with 5  extensions a 5  years  visa  like Elite  do? or standardising all immigration rules  not officers  whims/bad  days.

I'd be all for that, but it will never happen. Thailand is a world of inconsistencies wrapped up in a swath of illogical practice and devoid of any common sense.

At least she mentioned that we are allowed to work remotely here.  Not always easy to understand what they think about that .   It must be at least 10000 foreigners working remotely from CM .  Just give us a visa that is easy to understand, you could call it : visa for digital nomads,

  • Where does anyone say that "we are allowed to work remotely here" and what authority does the person have to make that claim?
  • Why should "digital nomads" be given such a privilege? What about all the husbands/partners of Thais that cant help/work in businesses they often own!
  • 10,000, really!

Well, well, well.  It does appear that the Minister heard what we were saying.  According to this news account, she spoke yesterday about the need for a five year visa to attract more retirees to Thailand and also mentioned the long wait times at the Chiang Mai Immigration office.  Amazingly, this news account doesn't mention where she was speaking and to whom.

She was doing a rehearsal speech and left the microphone on.

Well for all the knockers something may be stirring.

5 year visa would be a great step forward, something that has been suggested for a long time and they should have embraced years ago.

However deep breath, lets not get too excited and if they ,in their wisdom, decided to up the initial, compulsory, 800,000 baht in a Thai bank that will rule out quite a few

Not every 'long term tourist' is retired...

During a break, I cornered the two Immigration officials who came. They like to emphasize that their hands are tied by the law. I reminded them that laws and policies are made my people and can be changed by people. They interjected, "But not us, we're employees." So I said, "You're insiders. You know the problems. Send them up the hierarchy." They nodded, but I was left with the impression that they think they are powerless.

There you have it in a nutshell. A hierarchy system. Everybody running helter skelter bowing and scraping with no real input. Its immigration gridlock. The purser refuses to make funds available to refurbish the system thus it stays the way it is clinking and clunking along. They keep asking for answers and we give them suggestions and thus the old merry go round continues. Stall stall and more stall maybe the problem will go away. Thainess.

Even if they simply reduced reporting to 180 days it would half the burden on the immigration offices. A 5 year visa would be great, however if it still required 90 day reporting then whats the point.

Because you can do it online or by mail which means you dont go near Immigration. Its all speculation of course

Dr. Kannika Pornpatkul, talked about the development of long stay tourism, with a focus on health and wellness

She should have come at the beginning of February so that she could focus upon the air quality with dangerously high levels of toxic haze the local population has to contend with. http://tielandtothailand.com/chiang-mai-smoky-season/

It would be helpful if someone could present statistics for the income generated for Thailand by long term stayers. Money is the language of action understood by governments, industries, policy & law makers the world over.

Been saying the same thing for years. We pour heaps of money into the Thai Economy and if we "ALL stopped tomorrow," they might just find the Government Coffers severely depleted and decide the FERANG are worth having around.

The fact that we expats - irrespective of their visa status or duration of residence - are perceived as "long-stay tourists" is a pretty good indication of just how seriously our concerns are likely to be taken.

Discussing 90 day reporting with the Tourism and Sports Ministry would be like discussing National Park pricing with immigration.

May as well take these rare opportunities to discuss issues they can actually help with.

Absolutely. But it's a start. Maybe next time we can get somebody from the Ministry of Foreign affairs and the immigration section to lend a sympathetic ear.
