Boats cleared ahead of army’s march onto Bali Hai Pier

Threatened with fines of up to 10,000 baht and up to three years in prison if they didn’t remove their boats and temporary offices from public land, owners finished evacuating Bali Hai Pier on Oct. 31 before the military moved in heavy equipment to clean up the mess on Nov.1 as promised.

PATTAYA:-- As promised, the army descended onto Bali Hai Pier Tuesday, ensuring speedboat owners moved their trailered watercraft as ordered and overseeing the start of a massive cleanup and renovation.

Several hundred soldiers blocked off access to the jetty’s large parking area early Nov. 1 as tractors with scraper blades began removing muck, oil and grime that accumulated over the years. Meanwhile, jackhammers pounded away at the boat ramp adjacent to the parking area, which will force speedboat owners looking to put their vessels back in the water to go elsewhere.

It appeared Oct. 31 that the hundreds of boat owners had complied with the military’s order to relocate their parked vessels before the month’s end. Pickup trucks and tractors were seen throughout the day hauling away 100-150 boats to lots on Soi Kophai and in Jomtien Beach.

Apart from the boats, tents that operators had used as their temporary offices to sell tickets also were removed.

this is an area of scenic beauty and look at the mess they left behind, embedded oil in the ground that will take a lot of money to clean up, they left a health hazard and will pay absolutely nothing towards the cleaning, maybe now the local authorities will see the potential this place has and develop it properly after it has been sanitised

A very common occurence arond Pattaya. Businesses just take over public footpaths, roadways and use the space. A couple of garages and motorbike shops near me and also a few on 3rd road have made a disgraceful mess of the public areas.

Does somebody know, where are all the boats now?

looks like a lot of them are parked in Jomtien Beach Road.

Dirty, smelly, mostly 2 stroke nonsense, fouling the water, more traffic as one motor bike pulls 2 boats, 6 jet skies and a som tam cart

Problem has moved thats all

No Sir

This is just another step on the road to turning Pattaya into a "world class beach resort" it started around 3 years ago with the wonderful renovation of the beach promenade, soon the underpass will be completed, next on the list I,m told is the removal of katoey,s.

The future is looking bright and families with children will soon be enjoying the beachfront, once the flooding issues have been ironed out of course .....:cheesy:

You seem to be enjoying immensely your own cleverness for having identified such a particular condition, so you might explain just how big a problem it is that families with children can't enjoy the beachfront for maybe 3 days a year during the rainy season. Doesn't seem to be in recent years, so is the flooding going to get worse? How so?

Absolutely the flooding will get worse, especially during the rainy season and when the underpass opens at the top of klang on Sukhumvit Rd and they start up the pumps to keep it free from flooding where do you think the water will go

Why don't we just wait and see rather than posturing as ace drainage engineers? Anyway you still haven't explained how big a problem it is that families with children can't enjoy the beachfront for maybe 3--OK, 4  :cheesy:--days a year during the rainy season when flood or no flood they wouldn't still wouldn't be doing so in the rain, you see.

To most people that visit Pattaya my above comment would have brought a smile,it was meant to be a light hearted look as what is going on here (been living/visiting 10 years now BTW) I must apologise profusely that you had difficulty understanding this.................sit back and relax, there now I,m sure your feeling better already

p.s. having just returned from a pleasant walk on beach rd I see that the greater majority of the boats are now moored by the shoreline or further out in the bay.

I can see a business opportunity opening here for some of the speedboat owners i.e. renting them out in the evenings so that the ladies may entertain customers ( JSixpack please ignore this comment I have no wish to infuriate you any further)

Have a nice day now
