I just returned to Bangkok from a few weeks in Ukraine, where the highlight of the trip was a 4 day 'unofficial' trek into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. We hiked on average 30km per day, usually at night to avoid security in the area. It was by no means an easy trek, but it was one of the greatest adventures I've ever had. Wild animals in the zone are thriving in the absence of man, including herds of endangered Przewalski's Horses, a dozen of which ran us by at sunset on our last day. Unfortunately the organized (legal) tours do not allow you to enter any buildings in Pripyat & you don't really get to see anything. So, the only way to document the area is to enter the zone illegally with experienced guides & trek long distances. If you're caught, you basically pay a bribe and are 'escorted' out. Anyway, I'll try and post more later once I've done processing them (have drone footage as well), but here is an image that I shot just after sunset on the roof of a high rise in Pripyat, the city that once housed 43,000 people, now empty and eerily quiet. That's the Chernobyl reactor in the background, housed in it's new protective containment structure, a true engineering marvel. I've posted more on my fb & ig pages for those interested. Thanks for viewing Interesting post ; As I wrote on or in another post, I went to Slavutich in 2005 or 06, don't remember exactly .., this city which was built to relocate the survivals of Pripyat . I have some argentic photos of Slavutich and Chernigov shot at that date ... Popular Post diznax
Below are some more images from my trip through the Chernobyl exclusion zone. The full series of 9 galleries from different locations are here on my website if anyone's interested. I wish I could have spent more time at each location & come out with some more compelling imagery, but the trek had to be fairly rushed as there is a lot of ground to cover. Had a feature in the (UK tabloid) Mail last week (and also Spanish/Portuguese/MSN/Daily Star). Currently reading Midnight in Chernobyl, an excellent account of how the reactors and city of Pripyat came to be, as well as a dive into the abyss of Soviet-era bureaucracy & secrecy. The new HBO series on Chernobyl is also supposed to be good. Thanks for viewing, apologies for the 5-image post, each is less than 1MB so hopefully it won't lag too badly.
diznax
I meant to add info regarding the images: A propaganda mural at a (formerly) secret military base that housed the Volkhov anti-aircraft missile defense system. I believe this was the former canteen. A science classroom at Pripyat Middle School Number 3. The Azure swimming pool The Pripyat city jail/police station, remained open for another 11 years after the accident. Nursery School Number 3 in Pripyat. Dolls are creepy, I especially hate them now after this trip, there were so many. 1

Popular Post diznax
Hi, I wanted to share info on a charity exhibition I've organized with the Bangkok Photographer's Group next month. We're raising money for the Pick-a-Pet4Home animal rescue organization based in Bangkok. There are 24 photos from 21 photographers, selected from 287 submitted images, so it should be a great show. I have a couple of mine from the Chernobyl zone up for sale. There's an opening party on Aug 3rd at Cajutan Swedish restaurant on Sukhumvit 18, and the show will run through the 31st of August. We're trying to raise money for a great cause, they currently shelter around 110 dogs and 30 cats, and are always working to get them adopted. Big thanks to anyone who can stop by for the opening party or anytime to see the exhibition. 1

It's such an interesting place, though sad because of all of the trash strewn about. I was there last month, noticed all the vendors selling the usual food with plastic containers but no bins in sight. It's a sad place really, seen as a 'lucky' place to make merit/buy lottery tickets but represents so much of the way that we've treated the environment, the effects of climate change & plastic waste on display. Also got some drone footage. 1

On the other hand, why are these houses abandoned? where do their owners live? Who lived here? I believe that many Thai people imagine that the grass is greener elsewhere; that the problems they have encountered here, they will not find them elsewhere. It is of course totally false; when you leave a place you take your problems with you to another place. I believe that many Thai people imagine that the grass is greener elsewhere; that the problems they have encountered here, they will not find them elsewhere. It is of course totally false; when you leave a place you take your problems with you to another place.Yes very true.I live in a moobahn and a few newish houses are just abandoned, people cannot make the payments and just up and leave. One 2 story house, with a small shop attached, was abandoned overnight, one day it was a family home with kids playing outside and the mother serving in the shop, next day totally cleared, boxes and stuff strewn around. A month later, bank officials and a guy with bolt cutters gained entry, was the talk of the moobahn !!House opposite me also just abandoned overnight by a young couple obviously in financial difficulties ( many visits by bank officials ). Official police document in letter box, got the gf to take a look [emoji51].Next to the moobahn is a lot for cars reclaimed due to lack of payments, mainly pickups, huge turnover !!Ease of finance ?, trying to keep up with the Jones’s ? or just bit off more than they could chew ?Who knows what causes so many bad decisions, but Thais reluctance to buy a second hand house creates a large amount of newish houses available yet empty, and the never ending building of new houses continues !!
