School won't report student attack due to "loss of face", claims sister of young victim covered in blood

Told not to report the incident...Just suppose the poor kid had internal hemorrhaging or a severe concussion and died.....Lose face...? The school would be losing more than that. Then again, the cops, in all their infinite wisdom would consider it a suicide. Case closed.

Sounds like the proper loving compassionate school to educate your kids as long as you understand the schools goals are not educating your child to a high standard but not losing face for the school the school is always the number one priority and importance not the child.

More to the point, money, and the potential to make money, is the number one priority.  I am talking private schools, I have no experience with govt schools.

This thing with loosing face is a big problem. Schools need to teach kids that if they do something wrong admit it and say sorry. The school is sending the wrong message in this case

No no no, they are teaching Thainess 101.

To me, there is a greater loss of face in the way they have handled this!

Are you sure about that?

Seems like those involved except the victim are not allowed to be named and even the name of the school has not been mentioned, so the staff and the school can pull as much attitude as they like with nothing to lose. If I were were the parent of that boy I would cause so much stink in there that I guarantee some positive action would be taken.

When her parents asked why the CCTV wasn't working a Teacher said " don't know go and ask the camera"    what a mature answer from a teacher to say. Idiot

Maybe implying that the camera was more intelligent...which wouldn't be take much.

It is not only in Thailand. Similar incidents can be found everywhere.

BUT, at least for me, Thailand was a secret island of peace, where the girls inhale coke and the boys water or some cases beer.

Smiling, living peacefully, no drugs, not too much crime  .... this picture is broken every day. The crack is getting bigger and bigger .... or maybe, I just wake up? Time to wake up?

Please save Thailand for me...

There seems to be a general attitude that our way ( Thai way ) is the right way so no help or suggestion is required, wanted, appreciated nor expected for any change.
I am at the point that the only comment I make when I see a mistake is about to be made is to say '' You might want to think about how to best do that '' It has not been real successful, but has worked a few times in the past 20 odd years.

Assume you mean coke as in drink and maybe you did just wake up "no drugs, not too much crime"  - where have you been the past 6 years :post-4641-1156693976:?

If the teacher would have said that to me - and I was Thai, you know, because for sure as a farang I would go to jail - I would beat that teacher within an inch of their life.

Then I would tell them, "Now, I'm going to ask the CCTV camera if it saw any of that.  Funny, na?"

It would be working again...of course!

Absolutely disgraceful..................................  and so typically Thai.     You can't make this stuff up????????

Surely the parents reported it to the Police, The department of education and the Prime Minister's office......

Sure  they did at the same time as they named the school and the teacher.

Are we sure that the Facebook post never mentioned even the school's name? The journo could of course be frightened of the country's ridiculous libel laws and that his employers would not back him.  Or maybe the editor remove the relevant details for the same reason.  I am not a FB person so I do not even think I can look to see.   I do not even know how it works (and have no desire to find out).  This is as "social mediary" as I get.

LO SO behaviour , shameless and cruel as well towards the victim and his family relatives.

( one would consider to punch the same teacher straight away since its not gonna be reported ...?)

Lo So in what way? I think you'll find that the Hi So's are even more concerned about reputation and loss of face...

First step:  Terminate the principal; no reassigning to inactive post like the police; no demotion; Just have someone pack up his/her personal effects from the office and escort s/he off campus with the box.

You only affect change when the behavior is not tolerated and the message is sent, loudly and clearly.

The trouble here is about the polar opposite that we have in the West. Here the schools are afraid of garbage like "Losing Face" - "Kreng Jai" whereas the schools in the West will be running to plod and getting kids arrested, cuffed and sent to some institution.

Don't get me wrong, I do not condone violence or bullying of any sort, or robbery for that matter.

But is it really necessary to adopt this pathetic "Snowflake" approach to this kind of behaviour, at the first signs of trouble the schools now start running to the cops / authorities!

There are always going to fights, bullying, thieving in schools (and everywhere in real life). Whatever happened to the schools sorting the problems out internally rather than getting some young kids punished by the state and the police?

What happened to getting all parties involved in with the headmaster, giving them the opportunity to return the items stolen, give the little bastards a good caning on the arse and make it plain that next time it is the Cops!

This nanny state business is making pathetic pansies of kids who instead of realising what real life is like end up hiding behind the skirts of the government.

Fair enough, it if it continues, then by all means take it further.

These days however everyone seems too willing to just get the government involved in what was just kids being kids. (Different matter if people are using knives and guns etc. that goes without saying)

I think a lot of growing up and decent values have been destroyed by these liberal do- gooders that try to "protect" everyone from reality.

I think part of the problem lies in why there are so many snowflakes to begin with.  The schools don't go running to the police because they like running to the police.  They run to the police because they're afraid the parents will sue the school into bankruptcy.  I'm sure if it were left to the teachers, they would love to beat the snot out of a lot of the kids :-)

But today, a child acts up, the parents defend the child's behavior, perhaps medicate their kid, and demand that he get special treatment.

This country with it's face nonsense and the draconian laws that protect anyone with a business from anyone else relating wrongs committed via the criminal defamation act really just goes to show the real nature of Thais and their society.   It is beyond sick along with the lying and buying of justice and laws and procedures that crucify the victims whilst allowing criminals to get away with murder - literally.  It is shameful in the extreme.

What ever you do, do not tell anyone anything about what someone else did wrong to you, just to make sure they can do it to some other poor soul.  Enough of this crap!

That's the lesson the boy will be taking away from all this: One must sacrifice his own face to save the face of his superiors. First lesson in Thainess.

They do have a sense of humour, these Thais.

You're obviously being insensitive to the many unassailable virtues of "Thai culture".  An apologist will be along shortly to ask why you remain in Thailand, why your comment is even permitted on TV, and hand you your walking papers.   ('Probably drafting your indictment as I write this.)

If the whole concept of "face" could just be somehow updated and brought forward out of the eighteenth century...

In a lot of Thailand Teachers get treated as though they are really  special  people.

I do not have anymore respect for a teacher there  or  anywhere  than I do of a

police man or woman in any part of the world.  This teacher  should be made to publically

apologize to the parents, as well as to the boy who was attacked and robbed.  It is high

time  that Thailand give teachers, the same justice as the parents,  not any more, and no

protection  from justice. I also agree with DavisH  about some teachers doing all kinds

of nasty's..... to students  and get away with that as well.

Geezer

All that means is that you subscribe to Western cultural norms that are sceptical of authority figures, rather than Thai/Asian cultural norms that respect authority figures and teachers in particular. You do understand that Thai culture is not Western culture, don't you?
