KOH SAMUI: -- A female hotel owner on Koh Phangan went on Facebook to complain that she had lost 300,000 baht of jewelry.

The gold rings, five baht weight necklace, three diamond rings and a gemstone were all contained in a small bag within a larger case that she loaded in the hold on a flight from Koh Samui to the capital on the 17th, reports Thairath.

The jewelry belonged to 45 year old Sophita Fujiwara who owns a hotel on Koh Phangan. The story was shared from the Facebook page of Rapeporn Fujiwara. The owner only realized the items were missing after leaving Suvarnabhumi airport at the completion of her journey.

The airline - that was not named - would not take responsibility but in a latest development police on Samui said they had arrested the baggage handler who opened the bag and stole the jewelry.

He is Samui native Ibrahim Ha, 34, who worked for a private company that organized baggage handing for the airline at Samui Airport.

But so far only 31,000 baht and some gold rings have been recovered.

Police said they hoped to recover the rest within the next two to three days.

Samui cops said it was a timely reminder to passengers not to load valuables of this nature in the hold on a plane. They should be kept in hand luggage.

Meanwhile the Samui airport authority have held a crisis meeting to discuss ways they can stop such a theft again. These include better checks on baggage handlers before and after their shifts.

They gave out this valuable advise for free? Looks like there are some folks around willing to spend a lot of money for such information prior to their travel.

I wonder if Mr. Ha will be charged for tarnishing the flawless reputation of the island.

There could be a network of baggage handlers and their item analyzers in scan machine. One tipped off, and another one ripped off.

Gold is a special material with high density, any baggage scanner can identify gold. Often scanners used to find smuggled gold.

At least this stupid lady used a padlock or number lock for the luggage.

In 15 years, in never lost anything in Suvarnabhumi Airport. Could have happened in Samui, anyway it is a rip-off city.

There are only 2 airlines that fly USM -> BKK, one of which owns the airport and the baggage handling company...

Just saying.

I agree. Definitly more than meets the eye here, could go right to the top.

i inadvertently left a 700 baht mobile phone in my checked in baggage on a flight from krabi to bkk on thai. sure enough it was gone on arrival. i went to thai customer services, they weren't interested saying basically that i should expect a valuable item to be stolen if i leave it in checked in baggage... very professional.

my mistake i guess, but why should the assumption be that items will be nicked when in the custody of thai and/or their sub-contractors?

Perhaps more security screening of who these people employ would help, i have a family member who works at Heathrow , had to jump through many hoops to get the job

Heathrow or anybody else in the world, only low so people and robbers do this job. Millions of lugages are stolen yearly. Any suitcase can be opened in second.

"The airline - that was not named - would not take responsibility..."

why should the airline take responsibility? common sense dictates to keep your valuables with you all the time. i'd say the authorities should even challenge her to prove that she really had that much gold (or whatever that was) in her luggage.

Never filed a case as I thought nothing would happen anyway

Obviously she has LTD INTELLIGENCE if she put so much into a suitcase. The airline is indeed not responsible as their rules and regs say so.She should have asked the airline to assist her to safely transport the jewels? which should have been hand carried as a safe way.

She is lucky Police did a swift job here.Well done!

I never travel anywhere without insurance but I do sometimes wonder, if airlines were held responsible for everything they carry, that they might be more careful about handling customers possessions.  This "we are not responsible for any losses while in our care" approach is not really in my view an acceptable get out.  It doesn't mean of course that they would pay out vast claims as they would have the sense to take out company wide liability insurance but it would then be in their interests to do everything they could to prevent claims and keep their insurance costs down.

as usual, the fault is with the lady who loaded the jewels, not the thief! Really guys. Can we at least put some blame in the thief's hands?

100% correct...in that it's the thief who committed the crime.

fault is different, and can be apportion.... for example, to the immoral actions of the thief, plus to the thiefs employer for not properly vetting or supervising the staff... and to the passenger, for putting valuables in checked baggage.

People are continually advised not to check valuables.... continually.... hell, if I can avoid it, I don't even use undercarriage luggage, as I have seen too much of it go missing over the years.

I'll bet they jump through hoops at Heathrow. Your family member must have started after the bust of approx 11-12 baggage handlers at Heathrow back in the late 80's. It was the only time in my life my girlfriend got stuff ripped off at Heathrow in July '85. We thought it was russians at Moscow but the penny dropped when the big bust at Heathrow went down

My oh my oh my. When will they ever learn? Who in their right mind would check those kinds of valuable into the cargo hold, in a cheap suitcase, that anyone can open up? I could almost see it if it was a 25,000 baht piece of luggage, that was really secure. But, even then, why not carry this stuff on, in your handbag? It sounds like it was either an insurance scam, or some other suspicious sort of activity. If this woman is smart enough to run a hotel, why would she be dumb enough to check in all of this gold and diamonds?

Hmmm, sounds like a possibility, But I am certain that airlines are not going to cover such a loss. Private insurance? perhaps.
