Pattaya: The new family getaway destination for tourists?

A tourism organization has taken on what some might call an impossible task. They want to reinvent Pattaya as a pleasant seaside city for families rather than the sin city most people think of it as.

The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) wants to change how international tourists see the city and what, exactly, they imagine themselves doing there.

Instead of drinking, go-go bars and debauchery, DASTA wants to promote family entertainment such as scenic tours of nearby nature trails and visits to historic villages that are close to Walking Street in kilometers, but miles away from the infamous street in spirit.

I think it is already a suitable family destination.  I am considering bringing my elder family relatives here for a short health break.

After all my 87 year old grandfather currently is burdening the UK national health service having twice weekly consultations with a sex therapist owing to his insatiable urge to fornicate on a very regular basis which unfortunately seems of little interest to my 84 year old Grandmother these days.  Being in Pattaya may be able to address my Grandfathers problems at far less cost than burdening the NHS. Hopefully after 4 weeks in Pattaya it will provide a life long cure for him.

The reason for my Grandmothers disinterest maybe due to the fact of here dislike of males with grey hair, pot bellies and what should I say ? yes,  men who behave like men.   Therefore my thoughts are I could kill two birds with one stone on this family holiday and introduce her to what may well be more to her liking - Ladyboys.  I'm sure she will love them and possibly it will increase her libido.

Now another concern of my family is  for my Sister's son, my unmarried Nephew.  My sister is very worried that he continues to do things which, what should I say ? well they keep catching him masturbating under the bed clothes most nights.   You see his possible problem could be he is extremely shy and hence these acts are his release for not finding a girlfriend which as he 56 and still wants to sleep in their bed you can appreciate this is worrisome to them.  The cure for this may well be Pattaya where some of the entertainment industry ladies could perhaps coax him out at night,  possibly take in a show or two and teach him a bit of ping pong or gold fish minding.  You never know what may happen then that would help him do away with his masturbation habits. Again another family benefit of Pattaya.

If all that fails then we will just don "kiss me quick hats" and get ourselves photographed with a Chinese umbrella seller,  or are they tour guides ?

All in all Pattaya is already a fine family venue in my book and does not require changing.

I still take my wife and young son to Pattaya on vacations, there are many family activities and sights to participate in away from the bar scene. Pattaya is a place that caters for all, from the sex tourists to the family groups, I think it just needs a bit of cleaning up in relation to the criminal elements and polluted beaches.

This is so much maddnes by someone in power who hates sex. I remember this exact move by fools in LosVagas. They were going to turn it into this marvalious "family oriented" vacation destination... The city and business immidiatly tanked...millions in revenue was lost...sooo. Now the motto is "what happins in Vagas stays in vagas" all the old raunchy shows ,highbrow shows, hookers of every sex...all back and business is booming again.

Humans will be humans and a place for this type of entertainment is mandatory. It is basic psychology and biology...best accept it and try to keep the players safe not attack them. this is real life not old English

" Victorian morals" which by the way didnt work.

It wasn't that long ago that Madame TAT came up with the bright idea of eliminating prostitution in Thailand so as to attract more family oriented tourists. If that's her impossible dream then fair enough.

This new idea of promoting Pattaya as family fun city has likely arisen because some irrelevant, low-ranking, moralising, seat warmer within Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) is trying to suck up to Madame TAT in the hope that it might improve his/her career path.

Exactly. I wouldn't take my family to the red light districts in Amsterdam, Hamburg or HK. Why would you do so in Pattaya?

Plenty of family places and conferences facilities. They need to develop those and as you say, clean up the criminal elements and pollution.

You have made mine awonderfulday. Love your humor. You better  hurry as I understand they are taking a broom to Pattaya. It might become to tame for your free wheeling grandfather.

What Thailand needs to do is EXPAND the debauchery.

Non debauchery tourists can take a nature hike in the mountains of Chiang Mai.

Hmm methinks your just saying take a hike period. We do not want all them debauchers wandering through the hills of Chiang Mai. They might die of smoke inhalation.

I'm not sure I understand your meaning of social activities, as I mentioned I am accompanied by my wife and son, so I assume you are not questioning my morals.

Every country should have their Pattaya.  Don't try to change the sex drugs and rock and roll image.  There are plenty of family destinations in Thailand but only one Pattaya.  It is where people who want the sleazy side go and that is still a part of Thailand's attraction.  Just keep a lid on it as far as the illegal stuff goes.  The sex industry in Thailand is very productive and always has been.

everyone has his/her own perception of what "illegal stuff" is. Usually it is like: "what I do and like is normal, what others do and like is not normal and should be considered illegal".

You say the sex industry is very productive, but at the same time you say "keep a lid as far as illegal stuff goes". Well, the sex industry ("prostitution") is 100% illegal in Thailand, so what?

those "victorian morals" nowadays can mostly be found in the US of A, and scores of "good-doer-NGO's" want to implement it anywhere on this planet, while at the same time cashing in high salaries

The problem with this plan is that the place is just butt-ugly. There are thousands of beach resorts world-wide that are more beautiful [less ugly] to look at than Pattaya. Why not just hand it over to the sex tourists, it already has an extensive infrastructure of bars etc, which could be developed to include cabaret,  high end call girl services, and many many cheaper brothels for the less well off.

I fully agree it is ugly and it is hard to believe that some people obviously come here for the beaches. Though the food scene, for example, is fantastic, I doubt there are other places on this planet with such a concentration of fantastic dining options at such reasonable prices. Everything can be had, from 30-Baht budget meals at your local hole-in-the-wall Resto up to 2.999 Baht for a sumptuous buffet at a 5-star hotel. And in the past decade, so many attractions (albeit coming with a price-tag) have been added to keep everyone, including families with kids, busy for two or three weeks

I thought it was obvious but... I was referring to the under aged and forced prostitution that goes on in Pattaya.  It is not about the letter of the law but about crossing unacceptable lines.  There very few countries where people abide by all the laws and prostitution and drug use are usually tolerated to a great extent.  By keeping a lid on it I meant just that.

I was referring to the "keep the lid on illegal stuffs" and the truth is that prostitution is illegal here, and that people always apply their own perception. I personally have absolutely no problem with prostitution even though I am not using it, and it is 100% legal in my home country. Thailand should follow suit, imho

.

Prostitution in Thailand is very much part of everyday life in Thailand from the local brothels to the expensive escort services and everything in-between.  Many venues are owned by police or government officials or at least benefit from them.  It may not be legal but it is an integral part of the Thai structure.  Because of it's complete acceptance there seems to be no need to rubber stamp it.  Thailand is as hypocritical as it gets and this illustrates perfectly their system.  I don't use prostitution either but I like to know it is there should I ever feel the need!
