There are a few more than that but perhaps it depends on how big a circle you draw.

We all probably have different views but in reality we are seeing action against establishments either owned or catering to foreigners.....while such places that have been around for many years catering for locals continue. I struggle to see what harm they do. They are less aggravation to the neighbours than a karaoke bar!

The harm they do is stated very clearly, they harm the image of thailand... lol.

why do you feel the urge to clean up the image..???..everybody who comes here and has eyes to see will notice the hookers in about one point five seconds .... and might hook up in under a minute...if u sell a wrong image and than people who believe ur lies come here with little childrens u make more damage than good....in reverse beeing the whore capitol of the world and marketing this image you will have a usp - unique selling point...sure there is as much prostitution in every second slum in mumbai pple will flock to pattaya ...

 

and than only the right customer types turn up the ones who love to pay for sex of any kind.....

 

the only thing i would make 1000℅ sure is that there is health in the business and there is no human trafficking involved and no minors are involved a process of registration and control ... a quality label for establishments who comply and a wide range of crucial financial ,  criminal and other sanctions towards those who dont....

 

why do you want to keep things under the carpet there they start to stink and rott...?

 

ask urself what and why u want it as a police and as a city....

 

i would also introduce a tourist overnight tax of 10 to 50 bhat per night per room ( gh to first class ) with this money i would upgrade and extend the recycling and tourist ...security infrastructure....

 

please tv subscribers comment to these ideas.....

You're absolutely right about the similarities in the prostitition laws in Thailand and the UK. The big difference is the open display of bikini wearing or naked girls dancing on stage, wearing numbers! The UK's feeble strip clubs and lapdancing venues are a poor imitation, so you can hardly blame tabloid journalists making a beeline for Pattaya for their tittilating stories!

the overcharges mainly occur through private operators like taxi, rental,street stalls etc that charge tourist much more than locals....a tourist room tax / local tax / is not uncommon in europe....and these moneys are invested for that extra infrastructure tourists require ...if private business overcharge this money does nothing to help the infrastructure...i would be happy to pay that few bhats extra if i would be SURE that there are proper recycling facility's on the islands so no plastic bottle burnings at midnight in the jungle occur or human waste from guesthouses is disposed near the beaches...often visitors change the place they visit and the original purpose ( nature , quiet etc ) vanish soon just because the place gets visited..simple example. people come for a quiet beach ...after a while more and more come soon business start to use the beach to build hotels on it and dispose the visitors rubbish in the ocean..( not uncommon in th).so the beach vanishes and the ocean become another klong.....a nitnoi tax and strict control would enable to create a good balance between the visitors the nature and the locals.....

It's important to note that the "raids" had nothing to do with agogos in general. It was about short time rooms at some clubs. Most of the business with gogo girls is conducted in private hotel rooms. There would be a lot more short time action going on elsewhere.

 

Maybe the reporter was a middle-aged woman who lost her husband to a Thai lady.

My point was that they are really quite discreet, relative to a stroll down Beach Rd at 10pm.

If anything they do a service of taking the trade out of the public eye.

Tabloids like the Daily Mirror absolutely love stories like this, they made their billions through plying salacious tittle tattle and publishing pictures of scantily clad or topless models. Scoops of celebrities caught sunbathing nude or doing something naughty are their stock in trade - peak achievements have been catching most of the British royal family having affairs back in earlier decades.

 

This story is an extremely insignificant one that gets updated slightly from time to time if there's nothing else newsworthy, most people in England wouldn't pay it much attention. Any that were considering a holiday in Thailand wouldn't be bothered by it, more than likely the opposite since the UK is pretty dull in comparison. Thailand has had a raunchy reputation for decades, and nobody's going to eradicate it anytime soon, but it largely works in the country's favour anyway from the point of view of tourism, in much the same way as it does in Las Vegas or Amsterdam. To pretend it's not there makes the authorities look ridiculous and in obvious denial, and to seek to generate so many new headlines around a topic that would quickly disappear is very counterproductive. If they want to generate good publicity, talk about something else, and if absolutely necessary, show that they're cracking down on street crime such as the jewelry thefts etc, but leave the legitimate nightlife alone, it's one of the major tourist draws and something Thailand does superbly. 

 

The best advertising slogan ever created for this country is "Amazing Thailand", which sums up the country in all it's richness and diversity - sadly it looks like they want to crackdown on everything that makes the place what it is.
