Phuket puts sun loungers back on Patong Beach

PHUKET:-- Sun loungers returned to Patong Beach today (Feb 27) under a new campaign driven by Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup to “bring happiness to Phuket tourists”.

Workers started unloading the beach chairs and placing them inside the “10% zones” at 11am, Mayor Chalermluck confirmed to The Phuket News.

“Yes, this is first day of beach chairs being brought back to Patong Beach. This has been approved by the Maj Gen Pornsak Poonsawat, Deputy Commander of Royal Thai Army Region 4,” Mayor Chalermluck said.

The Army Region 4 base in Nakhon Sri Thammarat is the military unit responsible for all of Southern Thailand.

Gen Pornsak, who last conducted inspection visit to Patong Beach on Feb 10 (see story here), was back on Patong Beach to oversee the beach chair restoration in person, Mayor Chalermluck added.

“At first, we set out the beach chairs at 11am as a trial, but the tourists saw them and appreciated them and were happy, and they started to sit down using the beach chairs,” she explained.

“Gen Pornsak saw the good feedback from tourists himself, so I asked him to allow beach chairs to stay on the beach, not just for a trial – and he approved it,” Mayor Chalerluck said.

“This will help tourists to be no longer confused about why sun loungers are not allowed on the beach, and will make it more comfortable for elderly tourists who want to enjoy sitting on the beach,” she added.

This was Prayuth's greatest achievement and now it's all been undone.

Unfair. His greatest achievement was fixing the lottery ticket fiasco and after 3 years, well, still not fixed but they are producing correctly priced fakes.

I guess the real question is this:  Will these Patong Beach lounge chairs actually be free to use by the public?  Oh, wait... sorry... that's a stupid question.

Hmmm... I'm still waiting for someone in authority to remove the illegal lounge chairs smothering Pattaya area beaches.  Sure is taking a long time, ain't it?  Wasn't this covered under the anti-corruption-crusade decree waaaay back in 2013?

At last they consider the tourists' interests. If it remains controlled it will be fine. Yes, I know that's a big if.......

I would assume the other beaches will follow suit very soon.

What would improve the look of the "10% zones"  would be to insist upon new umbrellas; some of those in use now I'm sure date back to the post-tsunami handouts by Siam Commercial Bank. Those in Karon are torn, scruffy, faded and look dreadful.

Not forgetting his successes with bicycle lanes, clearing footpaths and preventing lurid dancing at motor shows.

Only it won't be ten percent- it will be 15, then 20, then 30...............................................................

Good.....I hope the whole beach is covered by sunbeds.....

Every one wants sunbeds except a few sour Thai Visa posters

and a few Eco nuts...

Things take time to accomplish here. Progress is not measured in days or months but by coups. When people sit on beach chairs the velocity of money comes to a stand still. Got to keep em mobile.

What a disappointment. The last thing Phuket needed were sunchairs back on the beach. The fat old broad finally convinced the powers above  to sell out, a dark day in polluted Phuket.

What was it you said not so long ago Pinot -

'beach sun loungers will never return' or words to that effect, is thailand and every which way will go as long as the bahts drop in the right slots...

At least people who want to actually use the beach can now relax in some comfort and the beach area where loungers are will be clean & tidy - has to be good for Patong and all the people who make a living around the tourist business in  resort.

If anything needs sorting it's the two farang scavengers with their metal detectors who are digging up the beach most mornings... not the act of doing the detecting but the way they just dig holes 1-2ft deep and do not back fill them, people come along jogging/walking etc - accident waiting to happen...

Many beaches around the world provide rental chairs and lounges.  I see no problem with them being available to tourists.  I know when I go there I expect to be able to rent a lounger and I love having the ability to rent one.  Now granted, typical Thai business sense may over do it and cover the entire beach with loungers, so some sort of limit should be in place.  I know when I went to Patong I could barely see the sand.  I thought Karon beach was OK.  I also understand that somebody living there may have their own chairs or loungers and would want to bring them.  But your average tourist doesn't have or bring those things so renting should be an option for them

I expect that the vast majority of tourists visiting Patong or any other major tourist resort are not looking for 'virgin' white beaches, they're looking for a nice beach near their accommodation with all the amenities - which includes loungers and shade umbrella.

I don't think so.

Do you believe that the vast majority of the 6,000+ pax that disembark from the cruise ships that moor in Patong Bay each week during high season are looking for a beach with no amenities?

Nope. They want to waddle from the pier onto the sand, park their butt in a sun lounger and order food and drinks. Just like on the ship. I've been on enough cruises to know what the average passenger likes.

As for those that stay in hotels, let's be honest - Phuket is not, and will never be an eco-tourism destination. That's not to say that the beach amenities shouldn't be regulated, but there's just too much money at risk and too many stakeholders on the periphery here to completely eliminate eliminate them.

How can ANY ONE expect to find a virgin beach in a highly developed area...

There must be zillions on undeveloped beaches on the planet for people

looking for that....

At resort cities people want sunbeds with umbrellas massages food

and drink not some untouched virgin beach with nothing on it...Nor should they expect to find that..

I think he is right, seen as in Phuket, most of high season tourists are over 70 years old..

I don't think many of them appreciate seating on the boiling sand by 50 celcius under the Sun...
