webfact Posted March 9, 2017 Share Posted March 9, 2017 Parliament to rectify “corrupt” judicial system Burma’s Lower House on Tuesday approved a proposal that will empower the parliament to oversee the judicial system following a heated debate between the chief justice of the Supreme Court and lawmakers, The Irrawaddy Online reported on Wednesday. The proposal was put forward to the Lower House on Feb 10 by U Tin Htwe of Waw township, urging the court to fix alleged corrupt judicial system. Chief justice U Soe Nyunt objected the proposal which was approved by 286 lawmakers against four who objected and 61 abstentions. U Tin Htwe argued that although corruption cases in the judicial system had declined during the first few months of the new government, it appeared that the culture of corruption was making a return and could thrive again. The chief justice responded that the lawmaker’s claim was his personal assumption as he could not produce any substantiated evidence to prove the claim.
