Pattaya's sex city image frustrates govt

Quite funny this statement about cleaning up Pattaya ..I have friends where I'm from who work in 3 different travel agents and they openly advise single male customers who want to go to Thailand that's Pattaya s the place to stay. There quite open about it as that's what the guys want . Women ,booze and fun. At Xmas there's a group organised by a local pub goes there every year consisting of around 40 guys and only for the girls ,beer and nightlife . So guess they need to sort out all the travel agents in the world also who grown to know if a customer wants a sex holiday it's Pattaya that's the first port of call..

I'll need to add 6 new destinations to my bucket list.

In Holland there a numerous clubs, just off main roads, where girls are available, the difference being that there it is allowed to continue as the premises are clean, safe and the girls have regular compulsory health checks. Rooms are well appointed and there is no pressure on the client to buy drinks etc. Everything in Pattaya has a dirty, shady feel to it, certainly not my cup of tea.

I know many, many people who would never in a million years visit Pattaya if it were not for the sex trade. There is really not much allure to the city. There are some areas east of the city that are attractive. Up in the hills. But, the city itself does not offer much, unless you are into go carting, sex, or shopping at the malls. But, you have those same malls in most big cities here, that offer so much more, and are infinitely more appealing, on so many levels.

I know many many people who live normal lives in Pattaya and have nothing to do with the sex trade, myself included. So far as a city in Thailand, it offers me everything other places offer and some extras. Shopping malls, movies, restaurants coffee shops, the same as any other city in Thailand. Pattaya however, has more food, accommodation, leisure and hobby options than most places in Thailand, Most Thai people here speak English at a higher level than other cities in Thailand. My condo is full of Russian families and European couples, I go and watch sport, Go out with friends to drink, dance and watch live music, have hobbies, a normal life.

A little hung over today because last night we had a BBQ on the beach, around 30 people from my wifes office and their western/Thai partners. Played Guitars, drank ate etc, Nothing to do with the sex trade.

If the Govt finds it frustrating , then so do the people leading normal lives here.

Idiots. Leave it as it is. The fact remains that it's only real draw is its sex scene.

It would be an economic disaster if Pattaya went under, especially after the junta has already squandered large chunks of thecountry's foreign reserves.

It is so stupid that they don't legalize vice, but we know that's a non starter as high ranking cops, army and crooked ministers would likely lose billions in dirty money as a result.

Yes, it's absolutely stunning that they can't see the benefits of 'legalize and regulate' the sex industry, as they also should with illegal drugs.  And unfortunately Thailand is not Robinson Crusoe when it comes to ignoring the bleeding obvious.

Is a lonely guy, who is a law abiding and kind hearted individual, seeking the companionship of a woman for hire for the evening, your idea of a bad person? If so, get a life please. This world faces so many serious problems, why elevate something as straight forward as sex for hire, to the level of a serious crime, and demonize those that partake in it? As long as the woman is consenting, and the man treats her kindly, and behaves like a gentleman, and compensates her for her time, what is so terrible about this transaction, in your mind? The fact that it is technically illegal means nothing. It is not really a crime. Only by virtue of some very dumb laws.

I totally agree with Spidermike on this issue. Where is the harm if two consenting adults want to have sex together? Why do other people feel so angry about two adults having sex together??? What drives these people to put their noses in other people's business? Are these people just too old to remember the joys of sex or are they just moralistic do-gooders that want to impose their religious morals on other people? I've come to the conclusion that they are just plain jealous. Nobody ever complains about an old fat white guy walking down the street with an old fat ugly hooker. It's only when the old fat white guy has a nice attractive young lady on his arm that you hear the howls of indignation....jealousy, jealousy, jealousy.

If the government is serious about cleaning up Thailand's image then it needs to figure out how to provide opportunities in the long term for the thousands of women who have few if any other options, as #136 makes clear. A badly failing education system in rural areas, deeply ingrained social class hierarchy that dictates dark-skinned people should be poor, institutionalized wealth inequality, and institutionalized corruption -- these are the roots of most of Thailand's problems, including prostitution. Perhaps the current government has taken some steps to fight corruption, but as for the rest, few Thais in positions of power will even admit these problems exist. Everyone in the world can clearly see Thailand's true face, except for Thailand itself.

I've thought about this. I think they are actually happy with the way it is. They have no real inclination to fix these things as it currently provides them with wealth and power. The rest is just noise.

I was working with an old guy a couple of years ago from one of the Scandinavian countries that came to Pattaya often in the 1950's when he was in the Navy. He was telling me how they anchored in Pattaya Bay and the girls would all come from the villages to meet them and offer services. When I asked him the cost in those days his reply was "a cake of soap". That was the going rate then.

The cost of doing business sure has changed but the business itself hasn't and never will. Leave the playground alone I say.

Bangkok is no different. Same stuff but no beach.

Yes but the things where a lot cleaner back then

I think everyone on TV would love to see the whole of Thailand cleaned up. Not just Pattaya.

I live on the outskirts of Bangkok and I consider here to be more disgusting than Pattaya. Litter and rubbish everywhere. Its a real shame people here take no pride whatsoever in their country.

If they were serious they would have shut down soi6 sex trade years ago, but to much money being made by Thai's and one or two Farangs

Soi 6 pays a lot in bribes too

Prostitution is already regulated in Thailand. As long as gogo bars and other places follow the rules they will be, and are, left alone.

It will never change it is ingrained into Pattaya culture and is a major financial factor for the country I am not condoning it but take it away and you

will have hundreds of thousands of people starve

The best way to handle it is embrace it and improve it through standards This will give it a better image

If you have an asset work with it dont try and destroy it

Most of you are seemingly blind to the fact that beach destinations are generally cash cows or buffalos.

Sex or no sex, Pattaya will bring in tourist dollars especially if they shift the draw from mostly sex to a more mainstream vibe with beachside shopping complexes, tropical style resorts, and maybe even a casino. The sex will remain but it will be more discreet. Think of it as a slightly more vibrant Hua Hin.

I'm not sure that regular holidaymakers would find the rat infested beaches and jet ski scammers appealing?

Hypocrites! Short-time hotels and 'resorts'  are everywhere in Thailand to serve the exclusively Thai demand for prostitutes. And it is a very thin line between the role of a kept woman, i.e., a mia noi and a prostitute........Hypocrites!

Walking Street and Pattaya itself will change considerably over the years. The Walking Street beachside will eventually be demolished and when that happens the authorities will go after the GoGo Bars and drive them out.  The central government is determined to change the face of Pattaya and wants to gentrify it.

Why do you think that Thai investors are putting in upscale shopping malls and building 5 start hotels. It sure isn't to attract Westerners who come for drink and sex.  The end result will be more Asian tourists to include middle class toHi So Thais.  The Government wants to get rid of the Western tourist that comes solely for the sex and it is working.  It will always be there in some form but not the in your face situation we now see. It will be more discreet and confined to side Sois or gravitate more to Jomtien. To those who think Pattay would die without the current sex profile- I am afraid you are completely wrong. Utapao airport is being upgraded to a true international entry point and Chinese and other Asian tour groups will pour in. Pattaya doesn't need us Westerners to survive. It's a numbers game and a money game.

The old days are on their way out... whether you or I agree is of no consequence...because we control nothing in Thailand

Yes sir, totally! Some people couldn't care less about the litter problem, even in their back yards. The REAL 'dirt' is not in the bars and clubs of Pattaya but in the streets and creeks!

There's no hypocrisy.  Thai places follow the rules and if they don't (like Nataree recently) they get raided.  The farang places are also free to carry on, if they follow the rules regarding prostitution.

Things will be different now with the happiness zones.

The problems will rectify themselves and hookers will voluntarily go work in factories.. All good

What he really said was - I want more patrols in Walking street  "a penis zone"

The only way to change the sex industry is to improve the economy. When there are legal jobs paying good money there will be less sex workers and less sex tourists. So instead of throwing away the last little bit of face they have why not give us a legitimate government and a legit constitution so that the economy can grow at 7% plus which will decrease poverty.
