BANGKOK: -- Shots were fired after a man wanted for murder in the south of Thailand stole a taxi at knifepoint and fled from police in downtown Bangkok yesterday.

Rorrut Lathiam, 26, was wanted on a warrant for murder and gun offences in Pattalung, reported Daily News.

Taxi driver Wanchai Suthiphrapha, 32, said he had picked up his passenger on the Bang Na - Trat highway near to Suvarnabhumi airport.

He had driven in along Sri Nakharin Road towards Ramkhamhaeng. He had noticed that the passenger appeared agitated for some reason.

At the Lam Salee intersection the passenger pulled a knife out of a bag when they were stopped at the lights. Wanchai immediately jumped out of his cap and ran to inform police at the intersection.

Shots were fired after the passenger had jumped into the driver's seat and headed off in the direction of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 58/3. There Rorrut jumped out and ran up to the second floor of a building.

He was soon arrested.

He said it was not his intention to steal the taxi - he just wanted to get away from the cops.

A background check found out who he was and he was detained.

The taxi had front and rear damage, a shot out tire and a bullet hole in a fender.

what an imbecile. Manages to go from being a passenger with no drama to in jail, with stupidity the watch word on his activities from start to finish.

The line about not wanting to steal the taxi is brilliant. When you are on a murder charge, the theft is kind of irrelevant.

Were the police standing up or sitting down when they were shooting?
