10 or 15 years ago Lumpini Park was well known as a place to pick up freelancers, not in the park, but around the perimeter road. It was known to have young, or possibly underage prostitutes touting there. Which is why those who frequented it generally kept quiet about it. I've no idea of it's status nowadays.

So Jezza why did it take you 15 years to stump up this info? I never knew about it

I think what this survey also shows is that most Thais judge all farangs as being like the sex tourists who frequent Pattaya, Phuket, Cowboy and Nana.

In the same way many farang stereotype Thais and Thailand; they stereo type us. And sadly that stereo type usually involves piss heads, low class behavior, whoring and brawling.

No matter your linguistic skills, you'd need telepathic ones in order to know what another is thinking.

All those dozens and dozens of wonderful, friendly charming Thai bar girls I came across (settle down), they were all mind readers! Bless them all!

so basically 600 Thai people decided to point the "sex tourist" finger at foreigners and a big alarm goes off and now foreigners are all sex tourists thinking about sex.

Great job on reporting this garbage.

I believe it, been coming here 40 years and it's all about sex, I would give it a higher percentage though, let's say  85% come for sex, the rest, shopping, vacations with families...........I go to a lot of Thai tourist places, venues, hardly any single foreigners there, families with kids??  Yes, single males??  not a chance.    go to Walking St Pattaya,  Patong, Nana, Soi Cowboy on a Saturday night and what do you see??   Just Sayin

If it wasn't for the sex trade over half the population would be out of work, half of Issan would starve to death (funds not sent home) half the businesses would be closed, half the supply trade would disappear, half the resorts would become a ghost town, half the

influential people wouldn't be so influential, half the number of tourists would come and half of Thailands GDP would be gone....

So it depends on your view point... supply & demand... one feeds off the other.

Not all tourists come here for Somtam!
Not all the girls sitting outside businesses are selling lottery tickets!

What a surprise. Not!

It's bloody obvious why foreigners visit Thailand, especially males!

Let's face it, for decades, greed plus unenforced laws have helped to contribute to the sex industry within Thailand.

The finger should be pointed at Thais, not foreigners.

After all, it just takes the authorities to abolish the sex industry altogether.

Why do so many foreigners visit Thailand, for what? Temples ? Elephants etc. Boring. No! It's mainly because of the sex industry.

This report makes me laugh.

They created the industry and now they want escape goats to hide their creation.

Some of the economics of Thais have led to some families "suggesting" their children go to Pattaya for "work" and send money home.

That's right. Many, many western men are fascinated by Asian women and I can assure you, vice-versa. The 'romance' of a new culture, the great weather, the cheap beer, the fun (holiday) life style make for a heady mix. These sex workers thrive on the fantasy. We treat each with respect, and life goes on.

Thailand is a sex destination just admit the truth there is no point living in denial.

Sent from my iPhone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app

Denial. Really funny. I have a business here for 10 years, on Koh Samui, and used to know quite a few bar owners which provided female 'escorts'. Most of them are gone now. Fact is they can hardly make any money nowadays, because what sells is everything else but.

Keep on living in the sex cloud, I don't really care.

In my interactions, most people who have never visited view Thailand as a very friendly and nice country.  Some might inquire about the nightlife, but that is a positive inquiry as there is a lot of people who like to party on holiday.

The majority of people that ask me about Thailand are mostly interested in Chiang Mai and the north, and just adventure travel in general.

Sex has never been part of a single discussion with random people inquiring about travel in Thailand.

I trust you put them straight ? lol

Ghosh unbelievable how badly informed some people are, I think people come here to see the submarines and aircraft carrier, some to do train spotting but sex thats a real stumper unless they are referring to the number of dogs on the street, surely people dont come here to see dogs having sex on the street.

Thai opinions surveyed about "what foreignerrs think" can only be hypothesis. Cultural variables would discount the possibility of responses having much value other than to say "this was the expressed opinion of a certain group of people on a given day. Whether it is right or wrong is moot". For the same reason a witness' opinion of what another person was thinking in given circumstances is just conjecture and invalid in a court proceedings.

.

What was interesting was the 53% figure for Thais who think Section 44 should be used to address the prostitution "problem".

Political parties in western democracies developed a sneaky electioneering strategy often described as "push-polling".  I think the survey represents a fine example of this tactic. Campaign strategists conduct frequent "surveys" as a means of electioneering,  where misleading "facts" are presented to either manipulate potential swinging voters or to develop results favourable to their candidate. Resulting statistics can then be used to reinforce desired community perceptions to justify future political decisions..

I wonder if push-polling was the intent of this otherwise pointless survey - to bolster community perceptions of section 44 and its "benefits" for citizens as a magic bullet for all sorts of perceived ills  in Thai society?

Ignorance is bliss I guess  - 20 years ago I remeber talking to a Thai about Pattaya and he thought everyone in Pattaya had AIDS

Take no notice of ignorance

To use this poll's logic one would assume everyone who goes and visits Amsterdam  and Hamburg  are also going for the SEX

and what about the survey some years ago that two out of every three Thai men use prostitutes in some form. These prostitutes are not all looking for foreigners you know.

Having spent almost 8 years in Vietnam in 1977 when I first came to Thailand I happened to see Thailand as a definite 2nd place as a "Sex destination" to Vietnam.

Now, I know many who thought one year in Vietnam during the war felt a lot longer, but how does one spend almost eight years there in 1977?

1158 were asked, the population is somewhere between 70 and 80 million - really representative.

When hunting for rabbits, shoot once to the rabbit's left and once to the rabbit's right side = by average the rabbit is shot now!

This is just a load of <deleted> - and how is it possible that visitors come for the sleazy trade which, by official accounts, does not even exist? The enclosed picture visualizes "Bob is here for the temples!"

yes, they have been constantly trying until yesterday  - interesting to think about the fact that tourists go for adult joy suppliers, exercise in law- abiding places and also cough up fair renumeration (in most cases) whereas "la creme" of this country rather goes for under-age "sweet treats" which their organizations apparently run in on drugs first - and then the dirty geezers come by the bus loads ... this is really <deleted> disgusting. Of course, using their powers, influence, brutality  to frighten the li'll chicks to the bone

All the authorities' raids in Patty, Phuket, BKK with gleefully photographed white-skin grand fathers in their underpants trapped in short-time hotels serve as a smoke screen only for the indigenous chick <deleted>!

I first came to Thailand - read Pattaya, back in 2005, at the recommendation of a good friend of mine, he used to have a bar and a house here, I was suffering post divorce depression, I wasn't after underage girls, just a nice looking 30 year old with a good body, and they were available back then.

I recently had some friends from Oz visiting, we had a few beers at bars along 2nd road and they (Husband & Wife) remarked how the age demographic of the girls has changed, they are older, larger and less attractive than they used to be, and if you wish to partake of a bit of P4P with them it is gonna cost you a hell of a lot more as well.

Anyhow, I don't need any of that scene any more, have been happily settled with a lovely lady for almost 7 years now.

There are diamonds in the rough out there but you certainly need time to hunt them out.............Not like the old days when almost each of them was a beauty

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I never thought I would ever utter those words 'Not like the old days'
