End for Kodi users in sight

Just seen on youtube (Project Kodi ) that most of the main addon developers are finally opting out due to pressure from UK gov. Metalkettle, Echo and many others will cease to operate in the near future. Also further bad news is that Microsoft and Linux are to introduce into Windows an update that will prevent you downloading torrents and also streaming. If all this comes to fruition, Kodi and all its deriatives will be useless other than legit uses for streaming purposes. Even VPN may not work with these changes being made. So will have to watch this space Im afraid.

A lot of everyday legal content uses torrent and peer to peer technology to distribute large data files, game updates, cloud syncing across multiple devices, Linix ISOs.

If the The UK (government) offered a way to stream TV, then there would be no need for illegal streams.

All UK providers offer streaming within the UK. Why would they offer it to people located outside their licenced area?

So you cant even stream netflix then?

Of course you can, just goes to show that it could never be blocked at an operating  system level

For a fee. The number of less-than-legal operators indicates the presence of a market.

The BBC et-al have been procrastinating for years about providing a paid service for expats (or anyone else who will pay).

But they would need to own the rights to broadcast each individual programme offered in each territory like Netflix or Amazon, et al do.

Its possible, but complicated. Also, they probably make more money selling programme rights to local broadcasters than they would by having their own service and all the costs that would incur.

There may be issues in UK but plenty happening and available outside UK. If China cannot lockup its internet I cannot see other countries successfully blocking streaming etc.

VPN usage will grow

a channel can only broadcast within his license area, a online stream would cost them more, than they even could earn and they would breaking the law, broadcast sportevents or movies without the rights for the world

This has been posted on the KODI website..

I think you might have seen news that several shops (selling boxes configured to use piracy streams) might be shutting down, now that court cases against these shop owners are passing their first judgements, and they are facing jailtime.

None of these shops have anything to do with Kodi - actually They are killing our brand and damaging our reputation. In addition, their use of our name is against our trademark policy (wiki).

In addition this usages of our brand makes it harder for us to actually work with content providers to get legal content and official add-ons in our repositories.

Personally I am more than happy to see this happening as these shops are constantly associating our name with piracy usage, going as far as to call their devices "Kodi box", which to me is similar to selling a laptop with Firefox preconfigured to visit lots of porn sites with stolen accounts and calling it a "firefox laptop", or advertising with "Firefox gives you free access to paid porn sites."

So to summarise: We are not shutting down, but hopefully some of the people misusing our name are.

Ridiculous premise ?   this would appear to be not the case !

as usual the most enlightening section of the article is the comments section.

Correctly noting that this will make people shy away from purchasing microsoft products (yay)….and it can be termed as surveillance…..so a minefield of legal issues awaiting the microtosspots.

Someone will hack a work around in a heartbeat.  People enjoy the challenge.  If I were 13y/o again it would be me.  Not these days though, brain has matured.

And what about existing boxes that don't upgrade their s/w? at what point does it intercept?

Books are very expensive here in Thailand and there are really no libraries. Especially outside Bangkok.

Is Game of Thrones being played at the cinema?  LOL

Good question I friend of mine pays something like 390 bahts or so for Netflix streaming. I think they are streaming world wide so is this illegal??

Netflix has a (very publicly visible) Thai operation which is still online so we can safely say it has been deemed legal.

Until someone high up says it's not of course.

I tried it when it first came out. One month free. Not as much content as is available in the US. And several of my favorite shows weren't offered. So we cancelled. But for the price,  it's a pretty good offering.

I'm traveling around Europe now and Kodi is great. Many hotels only offer one or two English channels. Typically only news. Kodi is OK on the tablet. A life saver for those rainy days here. LOL

Kodi always had a limited lifespan with "illegal" content, eventually it will be blocked its just when. Stopping the retailers of fully loaded boxes just means people will need to understand how to do it themselves. Other apps are far easier to install

I stopped using my computer awhile ago to hook Kodi up to my TV.  I bought a Minix ( like a Roku ), got the Android version and use Kodi on that. I am also from the USA and seldom watch U.K.telly.  Graham Norton is the exception, loI. I also have Kodi on my Android, Samsung phone. I hope I never have a problem here. Catching on like wildfire here.

Never heard of them stopping retailers of fully loaded boxes? I just bought, a month ago, a loaded Minix with Kodi on it. Bought it on Amazon. Kodi has been around well over 10 years so I also don't get the limited lifespan thing. Sorry scubascuba3 but I think you don't what your saying. Streaming is getting more and more popular, not less.
