rooster59 Posted June 3, 2017 Share Posted June 3, 2017 Ceiling collapse at Phuket Airport leaves one injured Eakkapop Thongtub PHUKET: One passenger was left with a head injury today when a large section of suspended ceiling inside the Domestic Departure Terminal of Phuket International Airport collapsed on him. The incident occurred at 2:21pm today (June 3) as Mr Buncha Sangguanam, 58, was sitting at Exit 81-82 waiting for his 3:25pm Nok Air flight to Bangkok. Mr Buncha was initially aided by airport staff but was later taken to Thalang Hospital where he is said to be receiving further treatment. The area where the incident occurred has since been closed off so that an investigation can be carried out and the rubble cleared, confirmed an unnamed official from Phuket Airport. “The cause of this incident is due to a large section of rendering beneath the 2nd floor becoming dislodged due to deterioration caused by long-term use, this making the ceiling unable to bear the weight. This caused the ceiling and its frame to collapse and fall into the area where the passenger was sitting,” said the Airport official. According to the fast analysis why it happened, I assume this must have been known before. But it was probably handled under "Thai Maintenance" = if its not broken yet- don't fix it. My guess is the rendering fell off because there was not enough cement in the mix due to the skim of funds from the original project. You see the same issue here time and time again. If you ever get a chance pop in and have a look at the huge pier at Na Thai just north of Phuket on the mainland. It was built post Tsunami and the concrete is already falling apart. Familyaffairs Posted June 4, 2017 Share Posted June 4, 2017 Symptomatic: a month ago the airport roof was leaking, so buckets everywhere, the place looks a shambles, how shameful for tourists coming through........this past week in BKK they found an unprofessionaly assembled dangerous elevated road part, and now this. Its endless. Potholes everywhere, if and when fixed, 3 months later the same problem. Dangerously designed road curves, traffic jams caused by totally unnecessary traffic lights for tiny 'sois' Soending in building a centre median in frint of Banbon school knowing full well it ll need to be dismantled when the electric tram eventually arrives and uses the median,,,,,,Constant electricity outings in Southern Phuket all in the name of upgrading the system...its an endless journey. Billions of wires knotted, hanging loose within touch.....There is no such thing as honorable craftmanship or preventative maintenance in the LOS. There has been plenty allocated for the sufficient improvement and upgrade of Phuket infrastructure. However, the bulk of that money has been stolen. Thus the quality and integrity of the infrastructure on the island is collapsing...especially under the new weight of low rent Chinese mass tourism. This was the floor of the 2nd storey (1st Floor in Europe) and a ceiling for the 1st Floor (Ground Floor in Europe) was suspended beneath that. The interspace probably housed electrical and water utilities. My question is (for the Civil Engineers on TV) is it usual to apply cement render to the underside of flooring panels?
