KRABI: -- A 25 year old American tourist is fighting for his life after suffering serious injuries in a fall at Railey Beach, Krabi.

Sanook said that the man had not been using climbing gear.

Attapong Saenjaiwut of Krabi tourist police appealed for help to the Railey Climbing Association after reports that the man had fallen

after climbing up to admire the view of the lagoon at the scenic tourist spot.

Named just as Andigo (name transliterated from Thai language) aged 25 the victim had head injuries and was bleeding from the mouth.

He was rushed by speedboat to Ao Nam Mao in Sai Thai sub-district and then to Krabi Hospital where doctors were trying to save his life as he was admitted to ICU.

An investigation is underway into what caused the accident but Sanook reported that the man was climbing without the aid of ropes.

The climbing point to Railey lagoon isn't a rock climbing spot. There's no real path there, just a muddy scramble to the top. If he was climbing there without rock climbing gear then he was doing the same as everybody else who goes up there to see the lagoon.

If this scenic tourist spot is promoted publicly, it shouldn't require any skill to reach or leave it. Otherwise it becomes a public attraction for which the authorities must be responsible for people's safety to reach it and depart, ie., a safe path. This would be especially public if tour guides are directing people to this spot.

If there were no warnings not to attempt ascent or descent without training and proper climbing equipment, the authorities as a minimum should bear part of the cost of Andigo's treatment and recovery, if not all such costs.  In the alternative there should be a post such as "Dangerous - Climb at your Own Risk."

Exactly,  however, the arrogance of youth and fitness, it will never happen to me.....RIP    Come on, an organization here to be pro-active...especially in the light of the tragedies with the ZIP line tides up north... profit is the guiding directive... Sadness.  Of course the main focus ... COME TO THAILAND at your own RISK... based on reports.... makes you think... but this is COMMON sense for all Travelers...

...and now, the Thai powers at be have justification for Tourists having traveler's insurance while having an Adventure in Thailand....
