I don't need to go to the actual viewpoint. I am in a condo about the same height of the viewpoint and look across at it.  I have a somewhat similar view of the back of Waterfront as the viewpoint has.  Yes, Waterfront is imposing and dominating--it was meant to be.  It is the signature building of Pattaya in the most important location--which called for a statement building.  Yes, it blocks some of the ocean, as other buildings do, as well.  Yes, it blocks some of my view of the ocean, too.  But, there is plenty of ocean view that is not blocked.  And, as I said before, the important view of Pattaya Bay and the breathtaking view of the sweep of the coastline with the city skyline in the background, is not blocked at all--gorgeous day and night.

Obviously your "imposing and dominating..... signature building" is another's piece of **** revolting eyesore.

What you and your fellow supporters of horrid buildings apparently overlook is that it never had to block the view at all, and the developer's greed is what did them in.

They must have assumed no Thais would actually care enough to try and stop them, happily to their detriment.

Good on the Thais that did stand up against the greedy developers.

Pictures from viewpoint of Khao Pra Tamnak in the old time. This location show panorama scene, the crescent shape of Pattaya beach.

Pattaya officials have halted construction of a 53-story condominium and hotel project at Bali Hai Pier that sparked an Internet firestorm after photos showing the tower obstructing a classic Pattaya viewpoint went viral online. Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome stated that the project - first launched in 2004 - has continually followed correct and fully transparent legal processes and he urged anyone alleging that shortcuts were taken to investigate the various hearings and reports themselves.

Compare to the current viewpoint. This is not funny for local people. We are serious on this issue.

The high rise building devalues the identity of Pattaya bay.

The rich people that would have bought those apartments don't care if the "common people" lose their view. They only care about the view THEY have from their filthy antisocial building.

Re the top photo. I'm shocked! I thought it was just one of those BS publicity pictures that advertising agencies manufacture, but apparently it is an actual ''park", which I assume is for public use, and events like new year eve etc.

If it is in fact a public park, well done someone, and a long time coming.

The photos didn't come with the quote, but they were showing the new road vs the old one from above, and included the new public space.

well, I didn't put comments on the photos, true .I thought  the difference before and after the road widening was pretty obvious.

they already held the 2018 new year event.

It's actually perfect for tournaments such as beach volleyball and open-air live concerts which is something Pattaya badly needs.

facilities you mean...

I am sure  "elements" of  "the expanded tourist facilities"  are already causing you more headache every day and will get worse by the year than a quiet building partially blocking your view only if you happen to live behind the hill AND on a high floor. Otherwise you should be fine. Just don't let it get under your skin as this monstrous will be around for a while(years) and may even outlive some of us.

Let's not forget that this is 2Billion Baht we're talking about sitting there and you can't deny the power of money. This international hotel chain won't give up without a good fight and the system has many loopholes and developers are not bunch of retards. Appealing decisions by itself  will take years.Meanwhile life goes on, cities expand and needs arise, roads get widened and all of a sudden one of the major hurdles is in trash(building too high for the narrow road it's on)

Add to this "Thai authorities don't seem to be in a hurry and take things slow" and you'll get my point.

Just enjoy your fuzzy drinks in the afternoon  and don't let this bother you.

developers are not bunch of retards

Quite right to point that out. The ones involved in this project are actually a bunch of, IMO, greedy, antisocial, environmental destroyers in full possession of their faculties.

Plenty of the same ilk busily destroying every Thai beach they can get hold of.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, but I thought it wasn't a real photo, just a tourist agency pretend picture.

I just don't expect anything good for the public to get built in Pattaya by city hall. I'm happy to be wrong on this.

There's a lot of land to the left of Waterfront that now has low-rise structures, go-kart track, and empty tracts of land, plus some empty land near Unixx.  I think you are right and in 2024 there will be some more highrises in this area.

If the environment haters win and finish the horrid building you are correct. Which is why they can't be allowed to win.

There are miles of land along Jomptien that can be used for high rise buildings without upsetting anyone. However, they picked the one place to build that aroused strong feelings against the project. Perhaps they are actually retards if they thought they'd get away with it.

Pattaya lost its view long time ago. I see nothing but concrete in last photo. Wanna do Pattaya a favor? Prevent  it from expanding more in future.Don't know if can be done as it's almost same like asking a nation not to have more than 1 baby. And the greedy politicians don't help the situation either. Damage is already done>Does anyone know the air quality levels at 6pm while sitting  in a 2nd road bar? How good do you think it is with 4 lane full of cars idling in front of you with no air circulation because of tall structures and long distances between 2 sois? Why does a 2 minute heavy rain almost always turns into a flash flood? Why are the broken wires dangling from poles bearing 4 times over the weight of its capacity and eventually so many either come tumbling down or catching fire? have you wondered?...witch-hunt and  take all Pattaya's problems out on this incomplete building in a mob fashion as if it will fix all its problems...lol..On the contrary, it might even help to turn this, once feared and abandoned zone into a  quiet and safe seaside public spot under the watchful eyes of its residents.

Which is why this project ran into trouble- because they tried to take the only remaining view left to the common people.

Does anyone know the air quality levels at 6pm while sitting  in a 2nd road bar?

No, but it's why I never used the restaurants beside the road near the Central Rd intersection, where cars were waiting for the lights to change.

Demand the developer pay for dismantling this monstrosity. If not voluntarily then start grabbing assets. They obviously greased palms to be permitted to build so close to the sea. Mafia to mafia deal making. Is that "Make Pattaya a family destination" crusader still about?

It is my understanding that this project has changed ownership at least once since the work stoppage and is now in receivership. Guaranteed that all assets have been stripped away long ago, and the only remaining asset is the building shell itself.

The approval to build was given to the original developer, the Israeli. Doesn't matter when junta gov has Rule 44 which allows anything. Maybe pull a Saudi Crown Prince on him and string him up upside down until he explains the way he got this thing approved.

I think the way it was approved is along the lines of how many things get approved, and unfortunately not relevant as to who will take financial responsibility for the mess. The development corporation is in receivership, all assets would have been stripped away at this point, buyers would be lucky to get even "satang on the baht" for their deposit and installments, and there will be nothing left for any demolition.

Conceivably, the original developer could be taken to court, but this would be a 10+ year process, and by then there would be no assets left in Thailand to seize. Even Section 44 can't get blood from a stone. More likely is that the project will be on hold until a new, more "business friendly" local government is elected, and a Thai developer will pick up the building for basically nothing, and approvals will magically appear.

Near Unixx maybe, but near Waterfront I am very unsure.

They managed to find enough land to build Waterfront just in limit of the National Park and far enough from the sea, but I don't think there are other lands left there.

You give the kart land as example, but it is in a big-south-Pattaya area where all new buildings are restricted to 8 floors (?), so no highrise there.

Tulip was just a subcontractor.Their 2 other projects south of the Waterfront is halted due to cash flow issues.Tulip has no more connection to the WF project.

Never say never!

Once upon a time, no resort was allowed to blight the beach on Chaweng- all had to be hidden in the trees.

Now, though, dirty great concrete resorts all over the place.

I found some photos of Chaweng on google to show what happens when greed overcomes the environment.

i don't get your point.

Your approach is a little socialist.

it's their country(Thais), their elected officials, their land, they decide what to allow and what to reject. they can build whatever they want, wherever they want as many as they want.

If we don't like any of the above, we exercise our right and leave

Thais can vote them in and out as they like.

Not up to us.

Why don't you read the post I responded to in the quote, before going off in erroneous directions due to disregarding the context?

I was using it as an example of how the rules change, not as a comment on what Thais can or can not do in their own country.

You look at development/growth/needs only as concrete and greed.

Developing countries need cash, not words. There are many social and cultural reason why they are underdeveloped.

They have growing populations  and growing needs.

I am sure deep down they don't like their behavior but they feel they must do whatever it takes to move on.

its my OPINION..not my wish, not my source of enjoyment and doesn't make me happy either

They also require that said cash is fairly distributed and those making it pay a fair amount back to a system that don't stink of corruption.

corruption will never be eradicated and will get worse with overpopulation and chaotic conditions in Pattaya. Sense of community is lost in growing cities and it's proven fact that humans in general break the law a lot more outside their community where losing face is minimum to none.

Waterfront was approved not once but twice by EIA, with the original developers and the group that took over the project.  So, EIA had 2 chances to turn it down.  It didn't.  The former mayor and City Hall were totally for the project, as well, until ......they weren't---forced to backtrack by a small group of vocal Thai protestors.

For your information. Waterfront only had only 1 time eia approval since 2008. The current building has violated eia code.

it will be back on track, come elections. no worries pal!

Waterfront issue is nothing about election. The project had been helted by the mayor, Ittipol who was elected since 2014. He had 1 and a half year in his term (June 2016) but he did not give green light to the project.

And for your information, Pattaya local election will not be in this year. The Constitution Drafting Committee has to finishing the drafting of the charter-mandated organic laws.

We've already covered this--try to keep up.  Lots of buildings are disliked at first--people hate change.  Later, they say I can't believe we wanted to tear such and such down.  What were we thinking?   As for the viewpoint, there's still plenty of unblocked view, including the most important view of the coastline/city skyline fronting the bay.

LOL. The thing that counts is not what you or I think, but what the locals think, and they want ALL their view, not what is left after a building is constructed in the wrong place.

The THAIS don't want this horrid monstrocity, and I hope they don't let the greedies win.
