Troops, police warn 'Arab' road racers in Pattaya
By The Nation

PATTAYA: -- Following a Facebook post complaining about foreign teenagers racing on a Pattaya road, some 100 troops and policemen were deployed at two roads to crack down on them early Tuesday morning.

Troops and policemen were deployed to Soi VC and Soi Yen Sabai in South Pattaya in tambon Nongplue of Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district at about 1am.

The action was taken after a Thai Facebook users posted on a popular Pattaya Facebook page that some 100 teenagers, who looked Middle Eastern, were racing motorcycles on Soi VC early in the morning, causing a disturbance.

At about 1am on Tuesday, troops and police sealed off the front of the two sois and approached a group of foreign teenage motorcyclists.

Seeing the officials, the motorcyclists left their machines and tried to walk away but the officials approached them and explained to them that no road racing was allowed. They were also told to carry an international driving licence if they want to ride a motorcycle on the road.

No arrests were made.

A local resident said she had been a group of Arab teenagers racing their motorcycles for about a week.

.....Told they need an international driving license.

Is that all ?

No helmets worn. ( probably )

And did the police check the tax and insurance policies. ?

Pathetic policing . So much for Pattaya crackdowns.

No. . . . the officials approached them and explained to them that no road racing was allowed.

Try to keep up.

Where's evidence of that probability? Actually it's not even perfectly clear they were riding their bikes when approached. They may have been milling around getting ready to ride.

Oh, maybe, but why should they? The bikes were probably all rentals and the issue is street racing. And if you knew that they did, how much better off would you be? Or is this just expert DSI: TVF?

Pathetic posting. I suspect the crackdown on this group will have worked well at that location anyway.

So this had been going on for a week but the police didnt notice it until it appeared on Facebook?

Maybe if they were out patrolling the streets they might have noticed it on the first night and nipped it in the bud.

They didn't notice it until it was pointed out that the perps were in fact foreigners. Then they couldn't wait to jump into action.

Why come Arabs to Pattaya? It's not halal.

Young Arab men, forbidden pre-marital contact with members of the opposite sex; not allowed booze (officially) and have plenty, in most cases, of money.

Can't think why they're interesting in going to a nice family seaside resort such as Pattaya? Maybe for the golf? :whistling:

In your dreams...

Since the local residents were upset enough about it to complain once, they'll complain again if it happens again. Since it's Arabs the police will be happy to return and collect fines; and we'll certainly hear about it here. So we'll see. However, there's no way to know if it's the same group. Tourists come and go . . . .

When in Rome and all that. These lads were just integrating into society.

But because the state sponsored mafia, ala RTP, are instructed to ensure any foreigner is harassed, that is why they are going after Arabs.  Never mind about their own kind, lets get the foreigners first.  Talk about state sponsored Xenophobia to the highest level. Still what goes round comes round.  As for road racing  then it could be stopped in an instant but of course the organisers are either connected to the Elite or else members of the Junta so money allows it to happen.  Corrupt or totally corrupt ?

By Thai PBS

PATTAYA: -- Pattaya police are now hunting for a foreign biker gang which is making  life of residents in the South  Pattaya neighborhood miserable from  the gangsters’ defiant behaviour and  noises from their roaring engines.

Action from the police followed after a user of Facebook posted a brief  video clip showing the defiant biker gang gathering on Soi VC in South Pattaya with very loud noises from roaring engines.

He was uncertain of the nationality of the bikers but said they are from the Middle East.

They gathered and made too loud noises in defiance of law. The user said he had to film the foreign biker gang briefly for fear of his life after he was threatened by the gang.

Most of them come because it's easy to get a visa and generally Muslim friendly. Both Pattaya and Bangkok cater to them. And once again, drinking alcohol is not illegal and against the Muslim religion.

Not many crash helmets in evidence .....no surprise there.

So why did the police need to tell them they need International driving licences ?

What driving licences were they using since a Kuwaiti driving licence on its own is not valid here.

For those defending this kind of thing it's worth pointing out that if the police don't enforce the laws on everybody using the roads ( regardless of nationality ) Then Thailand will continue  to have one of the worst road safety records in the world. A dubious honour , especially for innocent victims.

There is no such thing as an International Driving Licence.  There is an International Driving Permit which is only a translation of your own licence and has no legal value. Its a rip off by the RAC or equivalent and is not required in Thailand.

Good post. Highlights the misunderstandings about who has a licence to drive/ride and who doesn't.

The crux of the matter is whether road users should have some kind of legal licence to drive on Thai roads or not .

In this instance, where local people have complained about street racers , should the police have reasonable grounds to check on the legal status of the riders or not ?

There have been so many threads on TV about lax enforcement of traffic laws and the consequent tragedies for innocent victims that you would think that the Pattaya police might have had a less ambivalent approach to enforcing the law.

Tourist money is important but surely not when lives could be at stake. Renters of motorcycles should be made responsible for all insurance claims after an accident occurs if they have not bothered to check licenses of renters who hired out their vehicles.

Seriously....if you think that Thailand needs to do something about its woeful reputation on road safety it needs to start somewhere. No new laws are needed just vigorous application of the existent ones.

Yes.......it's a party pooper. Thailand is known for its free and easy living.....but if it comes down to reducing road fatalities by enforcing reasonable laws then it has to be worth it.

So inconvenient and trivial until you have an accident yourself or you are the victim of somebody else's contempt of reasonable laws.

We have the same here in Hat Yai. Arab and Malay Muslims come here over the weekend, drink alcohol, eat pork and have their ladies. They are called Muslim Lights. Latest on Sunday they switch from their white shirt and dark trousers back to the frock and the cap and are on their way back to Malaysia, or wherever.
