KRABI: -- Police have arrested a man who they believe is the mastermind behind the massacre of a village head and his family in Krabi.

“He is now in police custody and being grilled,” a police source said on Friday.

Worayuth Sunglung, a village head in Krabi’s Ao Luk district, was shot execution-style inside his own home alongside his family.

Eight victims including Worayuth died and three others survived. The only family member unharmed was Worayuth’s three-month-old son.

An investigation suggests that a conflict over a failing stone-mill project might have led to the merciless murders.

“A police team is now heading to Nakhon Si Thammarat where the alleged gunmen have gone into hiding,” the source said.

Let's hope that if it is indeed the guilty party then the grilling he's getting is of the literal type.

If confessions are made then bail should never be an option regardless of how "influential" the person is

Police found “crucial evidence” in Krabi massacre

Deputy police commissioner Pol Gen Chalermkiat Srivorakarn flew to Krabi today (July 14) upon receiving information from investigation team that they gained some important clues to the shooting of headman Vorayuth Sunglung and his seven family members.

Pol Gen Chalermkiat will join Royal Thai Police commissioner Pol Gen Chaktip Chaijinda in the probe after some investigation gained some clues to the execution-style shooting of headman Vorayuth Sanglang and his seven family members in Ao Luek district on July 11.

Pol Gen Chaktip flew to Krabi last night to personally supervise the probe.

Pol Gen Chalermkiat, however, refused the give details about the important clues his investigation team has found.

A well-informed police said surveillance cameras have captured the images of a Toyota Fortuner and a Toyota Yaris, which was stolen from Vorayuth’s house,  heading toward Surat Thani from Krabi province following the massacre.

The source said police investigators had checked all the CCTV cameras from Vorayuth’s house in Tambon Ban Klang, Ao Luek district of Krabi and they found, from the footage taken from a roadside convenience store, the Fortuner and the stolen Yaris travelling on the Southern Seaboard road in Plaipraya district toward Surat Thani at about 3 am, about 35 kilometres from the victim’s house.

The Fortuner was running ahead and was about three minutes away from the Yaris, said the source, adding that they suspected the Yaris might be abandoned somewhere along the road.

Police investigators also detected signal of Vorayuth’s cellphone stolen by the perpetrators somewhere on the border between Krabi and Surat Thani, the source added.

Suspected ‘mastermind being questioned’ in Krabi family massacre probe

POLICE ARE grilling the suspected mastermind of the massacre of a village headman and his family in Krabi, a police source said yesterday, but no official statement has been forthcoming.

National police chief Pol General Chaktip Chaijinda, who is now in Krabi, yesterday evening refused to confirm whether any arrest has been made. “I will call a press conference later,” he said.

The gangland-style executions of Worayuth Sunglung, a village headman in Krabi’s Ao Luk district, and seven of his family at their home have shocked the nation.

Only three miraculously survived the attack on Monday night with injuries, while the only family member unscathed was Worayuth’s three-month-old baby.

The current investigation suggests that a stone-mill conflict may have led to the crime.

Worayuth reportedly received a huge sum of money from the developers but failed to win locals’ support for the project.

Based on the testimonies of |survivors, the men broke into the house but did not immediately open fire. The bloody attack came after their negotiations with Worayuth failed.

On condition of anonymity, a crime suppression police said records showed Worayuth called his close friend, who is a stone-mill partner, at 9.30pm on Monday |and talked nearly 10 minutes.

“So, his close friend definitely was involved in the crime,” the officer said, without naming this close friend.

However, news reports have mentioned that Chetdanai Thinphang-nga, an executive of a mill and Worayuth’s childhood friend, has been summoned for questioning.

Police yesterday searched the homes of Chetdanai and his uncle, Wipoj Thinphang-nga, a former president of the Ao Luk Tao Tambon Administration Organisation.

Wipoj has reportedly survived several assassination attempts before.

A team assigned to review surveillance recordings has found that the vehicles used by the gang had headed towards the Southern Seaboard.

Police would reportedly search a location in Nakhon Si Thammarat province soon because the attackers were believed to have gone into hiding there.

An insider said the killers must have been a gang of debt collectors used to aggressive tactics.

“This gang has recruited rogue ex-soldiers. Those guys were armed,” he added.

A source at the Central Police Forensic Science Division said all the bullets that hit victims in the massacre came from the same gun.

“And that gun very likely belongs to Worayuth,” the source said.

Four food boxes and bottles of water left at the crime scene were now being tested for DNA of |the assailants, the police source added.

More professionalism among the ranks, blabbing to the press.

Maybe they can also investigate this and move him to the inactive desk.

"crime suppression police" does that distinguish him from the "crime committing police"?

It never ceases to amaze me how many times an officer 'In the Know' blabs about investigations the police could be holding all the Aces in a case only for it to be released to the media by some money / fame hungry idiot.

So now his friend who spent Ten minutes on the phone to him has time to fabricate a story, un<deleted>beleivable.

They do this because otherwise the TVF investigators are complaining again that they don't get informed about every single small detail.

I hope they've got plenty of charcoal in, let him sing like a canary !!!

Make sure he gives all the names before spit roasting him !

I really should ignore this. It's none of my business, but I just feel a need to remark that this kind of belief in the efficacy of torture baffles me. Are you aware that police use torture to extract false confessions? Occasionally it happens that the confession is true, but normally police resort to it when they don't have any evidence and feel a need to find someone to prosecute. Torture gives the victim a strong incentive to say whatever will make the torturers stop. It does not give the victim a strong incentive to tell the truth, but to tell the torturers what they want to hear. If the truth is that the victim is innocent, that's not what the torturers want to hear, and they will believe it's not the truth. Look at the well-documented cases of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah.
