Walnut bread is also available in BigC in JungCeylon for 115 Bahts.  Very good, taste just like what you can get in Europe.

I mashed the block of feta with a fork, sprinkled oregano, a pinch of sumac and cayenne and a lot of koroneiki olive oil….stirred it into a nice paste.

put some in the fridge and after a few hours the olive oil had congealed to some extent.

Questions to Bulk Olive oil buyer from Thessalonika, or anyone with information.;

Do you bring it in with you? I mean in your checked baggage. Can you bring a gallon (or 4 liters say) of olive oil in without airlines and security people going ape s--t?.

Will be in Italy/Greece in 2 months so .... would love to know if I could bring some back.

Had mixed fortunes on my shopping expedition today as I was unable to find any of the walnut bread in Tops despite an extensive search – – perhaps they have run out or haven't baked any new stuff, but certainly couldn't see any!

However I did have a stroke of luck as I decided to glance through the Olive oils there and they had a special on for their olive oil from Crete, called Gaea, Kritsa Estate (from the Koroneiki olive) buy one for 275 baht and get one free, so I did.

I also noticed they had another organic olive oil there for 285 baht and was tempted to buy it, but these two bottles will do for now.

Then I set off in search of the organic shop and I did find it eventually and it only had one olive oil in there and it was the very same one I had seen in Tops, only this was 345 baht. Only to be expected from a smaller shop without the buying power I suppose, however I didn't buy anything else from there because I was a little disappointed with what they had in stock.

However I have the makings of a nice Greek meal for tomorrow night with the new olive oil, hummus, Kalamata olives and feta cheese, along with some Greek style yoghurt.......now to pick up some nice bread tomorrow!

You had luck about the oil. The bread is worth a second try. It is more swiss style. In jungcylon it is french/german style. You will find it next time next from baguette.

RESULT!! Promphan on Chao fa West has a range of Greek Olive Oil. (250 baht). I'm convinced that it's the real thing as it states on the label that it will turn opaque if stored at less than 8 degrees.

None of the dodgy olive oils have that message. Brand name is GAEA.

Bertolli was hit with some fines in Italy a few years ago unscrupulous practices.

As such, being under scrutiny,  wouldn't their extra virgin olive oil be the real deal now?

I hope

Have a large bottle not opened yet

Thank you gentlemen.........found the walnut bread in Big C (must have overlooked it so many times) and got into my Greek dinner last night!!

I tried the new olive oil from Crete (called Gaea, Kritsa Estate) and matched it against the EV olive oil from Casino (Big C.....this although it states on the bottle that it is a blend of EV olive oils from the EU countries) and the difference was very noticeable. The Gaea was greener in colour, actually tasted like olives, was fruity and with an ever so slightly bitter taste on the finish, though not unpleasant, but didn't have the pepperiness I like. A very lovely EV olive oil all the same.

By comparison the Casino oil was more yellowish in colour, neutral taste and had a VERY bitter finish........no guesses which I will be buying again.

Thanks to all for the help.

Did read an article a short while ago which stated that the olive oil industry in Italy had been so infiltrated by the mafia that it was difficult to know what oils/companies weren't affected!

From MSN Fake News:

NOT REAL: The 14 Fake Olive Oil Companies Are Revealed Now - Avoid These Brands

THE FACTS: The story from healthylivingthread.com cites a University of California study in stating that "almost 70% of olive oil on the American market is somewhat non-genuine." It goes on to suggest that olive oils in the U.S. market are being diluted with sunflower and canola oils. In reality, the 2010 UC-Davis study found that 69 percent of samples taken from 14 brands of imported extra virgin olive oil on sale in California failed to meet extra virgin standards. The study didn't find canola or sunflower oils present in the samples.

  • 3 weeks later...

My wife picked up some Greek Olive Oil at Promphan that seems to pass all the tests. GAEA from the Sparta region. I scanned the optical code on the back and had a video of the history online. I think 500 ml was either 250 or 350 Baht. I can't read the price tag after being in the refrigerator!

It explained that the way to test it was to put it in the fridge for half an hour. If it goes opaque and solidifies, it's genuine 100% Olive Oil.

But??? What if the test is the real fake thing??? Or is there really a fake thing that can be real? Confused here......

I hazard a guess that the Casino oil will be a super low grade Pomace oil (ok for cooking) and no doubt blended with other oils

Since I m greek,allow me to clarify.

Bertoli is a mixture of unspesified and low grade oils.

Koroni -not koroneses-is a region on southern(pelloponisos)Greece.

It does produces some of the best quality extra virgin oil in the world.

Extra virgin oil is defined by texture, colour, acidity, fruity, and other aspects that I m not familliar with.

GAEA IS exrta virgin olive oil,and it sells at about 9 euro to the liter at greek supermarkets.

(we have about 12  major brands, selling from 7 to 12 euro to the liter)

As with every commodity in the world, you will need good personal experience in order to be

able to specify and acces the -proper- quality of  a product.

If I saw GAEA in Thailand,I would buy it eyes closed.

You should use extra virgin oil raw,(in salads, cooked fish exc.)as it burns easily in high temperatures.

And its expensive ,if you find it.
