A nursery in Phitsanulok was closed Thursday and Friday after a three-year-old girl was found to have caught hand-foot-and-mouth-disease.

Teachers and officials of the Ban Khao Samor Klaeng Child Development Centre in Moo 8 of Tambon Wang Thong in Phitsanulok’s Wang Thong district joined with tambon administrative organization’s (TAO) officials to clean up the school.

They washed toys and building to prevent the disease from further spreading.

Anon Chaengchai, director of education for Wang Thong TAO, said the toddler was taken to a doctor immediately after the nursery found that the toddler had the disease.

Anon said that the school would probably be reopened on Monday, but if it is decided that there is a continuing risk of the disease spreading, the nursery would be closed longer.

So far, 850 cases of HMF disease in patients have been reported in Phitsanulok. Most are children four years old and younger.

what the heck is HMF?

Perhaps you could read the first sentence.

Extremely common, not in any way worthy of news. Not even worthy of closing a nursery.

i can read quite well, thank you. hand, foot, and mouth disease is also known as HFMD not HMF. what's HMF? hydroxymethylfurfural? high maintenance female? harbor maintenance fee? to think the source article was published in the nation.

you probably have no children to say that it's not worthy to close a nursery over it. while not life-threatening, children do suffer from associated symptoms. by extension, parents who need to look after ill kids also suffer.

I've a child who had it a couple of years ago. If chicken pox is an 8/10 on the suffer scale, hand foot and mouth is a 2/10. Harmless, only ever makes the news because it sounds like foot and mouth disease in cattle.

well consider you and your child lucky. but more than 3 million have been infected with a few thousand deaths from complications from HFMD since year 2010. as with other diseases, YMMV.

if you think HFMD is just something a toddler can shrug off, fine. but do others a favor and stop misinforming others that it's harmless. if it is indeed harmless, then vaccine development to prevent HFMD must be just a hobby for drug companies then.

After reading the article, it really shouldn't pose any great problem to you, unless of course you enjoy nit picking.

So really a no-brainer.
