Advice sought on medical insurance and personal accident plans

I am needing to purchase a medical insurance policy  and am seeking to combine it with a personal accident insurance plan.  It would be really helpful if any member has any pointers to offer

specifically -

1. The name of an insurance company and accident insurer that you can recommend.

I would be looking to find a medical insurance policy that covers in patient care

2. Suggestions for making the above mix of insurance and accident policy cost effective?

Any advice would be helpful.

My one is Thai with  "  www.thailife.com "  l was happy with cover because l didn't start it until 68.

32,000 per year for health cover until 99 yr,  2000 per year accident cover until 80 yr.

It comes with 100,000 payment in either situation on popping clogs.

l withdraw my claim that health care is ideal for me, just got a renewal through of 10,000 baht hike, the 32,000 was supposed to be the same for 10 years they lied to us as l see it.

I was just about to respond and say i had the same and after the first year it suddenly went up by 8000bht a year. Rang them explained i was told no rise in premium untill i was 70. There answer you must have misheard and its not in writing anywhere on policy. My fault should have read the whole thing however would i have looked for that in the first place. Cancelled the policy they even tried to charge me for that no chance.

Looking around for a new provider.

I've had BUPA for about 30 years and have always had good service. BUPA Thailand has very reasonable premiums and you can choose from about four levels to suit your needs. You can choose to have only in-patient cover which drastically reduces the premium too.

I have done alot of research on personal accident insurance and found that Bangkok Insurance had the best policy - better than adding it to my BUPA. I recommend you check them out in your own search. You can go directly to any Bangkok Insurance office to sign up for it.

Accident insurance is easy to come by in Thailand at most ages my one is up to 80 year old, l reckon the cover amounts are reflected in how much you pay.

Health insurance is separate in my case the amount you pay as l have just found out is on age,  l don't think Bupa would be affordable at 70 yr old unless maybe you have been with them a long time.

If l knew what l knew now l would of just saved the money to one side.

I don't know what you consider reasonable and maybe you pay less because you started the policy 30 years ago, but when I was getting quotes on insurance last year as I remember BUPA was over $500/month for out patient only. I ended up getting MSI for less than $400/month and AXA and CIGNA were just a little more. And I think all of them include accident coverage. Of course the coverage was ridiculously high for Thailand. 2 million dollars/year. But it seemed like the choices were too low or too high coverage.

Correction. I mean in patient, not out patient.

I pay about one tenth of that for BUPA Thailand Ruby policy, which provides adequate coverage for me in Thailand.

My guess is that your BUPA quote was for BUPA International for international (anywhere) coverage. If you live permanently in Thailand, as I do, the Thailand policy is all you need.

Short term travel insurance (usually cheap) can be taken out on an ad hoc basis.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was. And I also live permanently in Thailand and don't need the international coverage. I can always buy some short term coverage for a week or so when I travel. How much coverage do you have? Where can I get a quote? My policy is up for renewal in November.

BUPA Thailand has offices all over. Or go to their website (or call them) if you are not located near to one. I've had very professional service from them always. You can choose the level of policy to suit your own needs from Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond, etc policies.

No problem. I live in Bangkok. I guess I just didn't try hard enough to find a Thailand only policy with enough coverage. The couple I contacted were 3 or 4 million Baht maximum which It didn't think was enough.

I really don't know, nor do I understand why BUPA quoted such high premiums for you. Maybe it depends on your age. How old are you, if I may ask. I have had my insurance cover with

an insurance company back home for well over 30 years and it covers me fully whilst overseas including Thailand, of course. The cost is less than $500 and I am over 70 years old. However, my Thai wife who is in her early 50th has an insurance with BUPA at the highest level (Platinum) for which she pays about 70,000 BHT (app.3,000 ) Per year which is less than half of the price quoted to you for in patients cover only. Sorry, but I simply can't understand this!

I used Bupa Thailand, like many others, when I settled in Thailand. It's depending of age, what insurance will accept you, but under 60 or 65 year old it's normally possible; some few insurance companies accepts applicants up to 70 years old. Bupa states they'll keep you covered for life (but annual fees may rock to sky-high level, especially if you claim something).

Bupa has a variety of health insurances, combined with Personal Accident (might be optional in some cases, and included in others); but there are many options, some earlier forum-threads has quite detailed information about possibilities, so try forum-search...

If you cannot get a Health insurance, some (if not all) of the Thai banks offers Personal Accident insurance; Bangkok Bank for example has a senior insurance covering people up to 100 years of age.

When I spoke to Bupa in Thailand 2 years ago as was coming up to 60th bday, the price for Platinum was around 85K baht per year but the proposed policy had so many ifs/buts that if you had farted in the last 20 years then any medical problem in your whole digestive system would not have been covered and the same applied to any other illness/system .Basically it would have been worthless to try nd get BUPA to cover any illness requiring in patient treatment.

As mentioned BUPA international is horribly expensive and really over the top for normal life in Thailand unless your always travelling.

FWIW.

Like all insurances you need to read the fine print to see how they can wiggle out of it. The thing about insurance is it covers you when you cant pay: think car insurance where you could be claimed on to millions of baht if someone sued you to cover their medical and car replacement costs. If the cover becomes too expensive and there are so many clauses that they can get out of it, then just save the money up and pay out when needed. Also location determines cost of health care; near Bangkok/Pattaya/Phuket/Samui you are going to pay through the nose; up in the NE where we stay (Khon Kaen) its really cheap. Most healthcare is cheap; just operations and specialist treatment costs. But you can shop around, agree a price and then take the treatment.

The one l had mentioned about alcohol levels found in the blood on admittance to hospital could annul payment or affect full payment to the hospital.

Seeing as l like a couple beers found that a bit unsettling making me wonder what other get out clauses there are.

I had similar experience. With Generali. I was 41 or 42. Rates locked in. Great coverage. Class 1.

Then they left Thailand and all business was bought by another company who doubled my premium.

I was livid.

Let it lapse as I was getting new policy and while in process I had a catastrophic accident. I wish I had not had insurance my whole life and then went 8 months without to have such an event. Big mistake.

Bottom line: get it while young and keep it because the problem can be even worse if s thing happens and then you are a walking pre existing condition and coverage is no longer worth it and costs even more.

Personally, the original poster question provides very little information which makes it hard to provide proper information.  The poster should go to the other Thread regarding medical.

As many of us know, insurance is sold ala carte,  your age and pre-existing conditions will determine what you pay or whether you get accepted. The older you are with pre-existing condition might as well start working out more watch your weight and create your own health saving account.

Trying to beat the system I've moved around a bit from one company to another. To each his own but Bupa is not cheap as people think. As noted, whatever you choose you don't find out what you are actually getting until you put your money down and get all the paperwork.

Whenever you google they follow you and those ads for expat insurance like Cigna, forget it ask for a quote and you will get Thousands of USD high premium quotes with high deductibles.

Recently I downside and got a policy with Neng, office inside Pattaya People he has a policy I consider better being offer for years by AA Insurance who represents the Pattaya Expat Club members.  He has a underwriting with AXA, at 1million/1.5 policy is pretty reasonable if you can get accepted and over 65 years of age. The 1m, is something like 29,000 baht and 1.5 35,000. Includes a 10,000 baht accident coverage. I got a added policy for 2,000 baht a year that covers 50,000/100,000 accident.

Have had Thai (Expat) Bupa, LMG,  no assurances, no real rights here in Thailand, they will find a way to cancel your policy if it doesn't suit their bottom line.

Good luck

I'd suggest staying away for companies based in Thailand.  Overcharged and underinsured, and problematic.

Go with an established international provider who provides expat insurance. Others have mentioned some options.  Also check out HealthCare International.

I am with BUPA Platinum, GOOD, and they never refuse anything, even ingrowing toenail. Problems are:

Im over 60 so its dear. Last time about 3000 usd. But they cant stop you staying with them forever unless you lie or something.

The PA is limited to 100,000b I think. It's not a Life Ins.

The small print allows them to ask more the next year if you have a big thing done. Defeats the object. If I have my leg chopped off, I dont expect the bill to be 'supplemented" at the next premium. I pay 3000Usd to avoid more expense.

All insurance is a racket. My cousin works in it. She told me a lot.

Eddy
