CityNews – Thailand was awarded the best country to start a business in 2017 by US News. According to their website, “Best Countries is a rankings, news and analysis project created to capture how countries are perceived on a global scale. The rankings evaluate 80 countries across 24 rankings drawn from a survey of more than 21,000 global citizens, measuring 75 dimensions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies.”

It is the second year in a row for Thailand to win the first place as world’s best countries to start a business and Thailand also ranks overall at 26th for best countries of the world. According to the US News, the Best Countries to Start a Business are ranked based on scores from more than 6,000 business decision-makers on a compilation of five equally weighted country attributes: affordable, bureaucratic, cheap manufacturing costs, connected to the rest of the world and provides easy access to capital.

I am pretty sure this is about foreign companies setting up offices in Thailand  which is quite different than Nigel from Kent and Noi from Buriram coming up with a novel idea to open a bar.

Best is an over blown exaggeration.  For a foreigner, is has lots of pitfalls, but it is inexpensive, so you are allowed to make mistakes which in other places would be expensive. Cost of office space can be cheap as well, but the overall hassles make it a place with nice, inexpensive resources to use once in a while, not a place to setup shop.

Just make sure your Thai partners are in amongst the local business elites and you'd have a decent chance of not getting rubbed the wrong way.

And that those Thai partners are blood relatives of your Thai wife, who is the same generation as you and with whom you have had a fairly good relationship for no less than 5 years.

I thought foreigners could only hold a maximum 49% minority share in any business in Thailand. Or am I wrong?

How do these big American restaurant chains get around that?

Franchises...
